rough af job market out there for y’all in software
From certain youtube videos I keep hearing things like “university is a scam” “you should go only if you are something high demanding like nurse, lawyer, engineer” or “you should take practical interships over university”
My mom was never overtly homophobic but when I was younger I didn’t especially want her to know I was gay 1. because 'm a private person 2. because I didn’t know how she’d react
She tended to kind of see being gay/trans as a… sad thing? Not because she thought being gay itself was sad but because it’d get you bulled, and that’s the main thing she thought about it, that would be her first thought if she heard somebody was gay, “I feel so bad for them, school must’ve been hard”. Mostly because she was born in the 60s when it was a lot harder, l think.
So I thought she’d still be… disappointed if I came out n the same way she’d be disappointeded if I got a facial scar r something, because she’d be worred others would be cruel to me for it.
Meanwhile I was openly gay basically my entire life and nobody ever gave me shit for it at school!
When I became like “ok this is fine” was… well 1. when I got a girlfriend I felt like telling her about and it became relevant 2. when I was in college and not high school and she’d be less worried about bullying and 3. when she had an extended argument wth my uncle tryng t cnvnce hm t’s fne t be gay and 4. when she brke ff frm the Cathlic church because “they judge s much” i.e. they are hmophobic
I dont care about people being uncomfortable around gay people there are billions of them, its not that deep. Im just saying that i think they lied that they feel comfortable. The lie is what i called out not the discomfort. Could probably lying to oneself, doesnt need to be a conscious lie
Those statements are not universally true
But they are not universally untrue either
We almost certainly send way way way more people to college than need to go (here in the US)
I suppose certain traditional customs don’t last forever
[insert joke that doxxes Gummy]
Dude i need to backread and mass delete any specifying posts
Ye I think the lying to yourself part there is probably ~accurate
But on the other hand it probably is the truth if they never have to deal with it in their immediate circle
Just a matter of whether it’s true in the abstract or true when you’re put up to a real test, I guess
From my perspective. I would never attend uni if I’d have to pay 100k+ USD afterwards, how am I going to eat
Ehhh l th-nk there are genu-ne reas-ns that hav-ng a gay k-d -s different from being around a gay cou-le -n -ublic f-r somebody, and while I think not being okay with a gay kid is obviously a form of homophobia, it doesn’t mean the person in question is actually unc-mfortable with all gay people. It’s more a matter of the whole “now -ther people will be homophobic to you, and y-ur relatives will judge b-th y-u and me, and -t’ll be a wh-le -rdeal, can’t y-u just be normal”
A lot of people go in-state, where it is a lot cheaper, and can be free depending on your standardized test scores
yeah i mean i think taking on massive debt is highly unlikely to be worth it unless you’re going into med school or law school
I had free tu-tion in-state and didn’t go #stup-d (all of my in-state universities I felt I’d be genuinely miserable if I went there, it was only tuition not room and board, and the main university I could’ve gone to didn’t let me in to their honour college despite letting in my friend who had a strictly worse application)
and even then you need to be sure that’s what you’ll be doing long-term
Weren’t universities in both the UK and USA free at some point. Cuz I wonder what warrants them to cost so much
living in a state with a good public school is OP
prolly
haven’t been for a good while tho
I really wanted to get into one of the Ivies I applied to specifically so I could be like “I can get into a damn Ivy but n-t y-ur honours c-llege???” but unf-rtunately that was n-t happening
