that sounds like a cultural problem
worth addressing!
itās ok Iām used to it it also happened in robotics
robotics may also have a culture problem
I wrote my college essay somewhat about wanting to break stereotypes and encourage more girls to do engineering by leading by example however it turns out Iām just viewed as an exception

which I probably should have just expected
buh
not reason to do nothing tbh!
I considered engineering at one point
I quickly found out I hated physics
You are very strong
genuinely worth addressing (preferably privately?) if you have any trust in the people in question
otherwise if you guys have somebody in charge of culture, or else you can push to be that person
mega mega mega not good for team culture to have casual exclusionary comments be seen as acceptable to make
but like a āhey im not offended but i also didnāt appreciate when you said [comment]ā will probably make most well-meaning people be like āshit sorryā
I have somewhat of an issue bringing it up because it makes me feel like I reinforce certain stereotypes if I say it makes me uncomfortable
and I realize this is like
prolly a big reason why it happens but yeah
sometimes all it takes is a bit of self-reflection
yeah no I 100% get that
and thats why I say to do it privately
making a big deal out of it is deffo counterproductive
but like if they donāt know then they have no reason to reflect or change
so it is worth speaking up
itās difficult to bring up becuase Iām not even entirely sure it makes me
Super uncomfortable? Becuase most of the time they do it like entirely ironing (like theyāre not actually trying to degrade women and they know itās not okay to joke about)
Key word MOST of the time
But like I mostly just wish the jokes didnāt exist in the first place because they still like subtly reinforce certain concepts I donāt agree with
*ironically
so like
as I said
you can say you arenāt offended if you arenāt
but itās still probably worth speaking up
imo ironic āhaha women suckā jokes are a very fast and easy gateway for unironic jokes to happen, or jokes that are āironicā but actually reflect some of the speakers genuine beliefs
Its not always bad by any means but it really depends on the enviornment and can easily become harmful
liiike itās not an offensive joke really itās just probably still a bad joke to make if you cared about dismantling stereotypes, I think
