I don’t relate with Shinji at all and never have but I have also never understood the flak he catches just for being depressed
like sure i dont have depression myself but that doesn’t mean I don’t think a story written by somebody who has struggled with it immensely is automatically bad just because the mc is doing things I wouldn’t

it’s more of a “i must think deeply about this to wring my own meaning out of it through great effort” type work
whether this would be helped or hurt by haziness is up to you

A lot of my gripes with it stem from it using a lot of vague symbolism that, per the creator, have zero actually purpose other than to look/sound cool. All of the references to Christian mythology? Meaningless. Were the characters meant to be interpreted as struggling with anything particular? Per the author, no.
