I have shared this with other people who have insisted that there’s no way that Anno intended nothing, but he’s been consistent on this. Animators have confirmed that some of the shit was just there because they thought it was exotic or mysterious, but is actually saying nothing.

I personally respected how it was willing to make its main cast of characters very flawed people, and for as much as it descends into [motions towards whatever the second half of EoE was], it still feels like it maintains its emotional core above all else.
Haven’t seen the Rebuild films yet, but two of the film guys I know love those films, so I’ve gotta watch them at some point.

I dunno, I think I give pieces of media a significant amount of leeway to do dumb things and have dumb plot holes and have dumb characters and be annoying when thoroughly analyzed if it’s in service of a creator’s vision.
Unless it’s a game and locks that content behind me having to beat the Last Judge.

You can probably pick any Gundam series at random, and get child soldiers suffering at the hands of war.
Utena is really good, but you have to commit to it. It keeps its cards so fucking close to its chest until the very end, and then makes you an understander. It’s almost hard to recommend for that reason because it’s hard to know what’s going on until you finish it, and actually sit down to chew on what it was saying, but I found it really rewarding to do so.

Gunbuster. I think that might be a decent recommend if you can ignore the fact that the studio ran out of runway as they reached the end (this seems to be a trend with Gainax stuff).

You could also swing the exact opposite direction and watch rom-coms (Kaguya-sama, Skip and Loafer, etc).
