Ok so . basic terms plato’s allegory of the cave is an allegory where you have a bunch of people imprisoned in a cave and they only see things through the shadows that they cast upon the walls and not the objects themselves. Then socrates (written by plato) says that people wouldnt want to leave the cave because the sun is bright. Good metaphor for many bad situations

Important for this argument but not cultural relevance are the following: 1) the shadows they see are of objects being carried by other people and 2) the prisoners play games as to what objects would come after another, etc.

So unfortunately, the allegory of the cave was wrotten in the republic, which is about how cities ought to work or smth (we didn’t read the whole thing) so in that context, instead of being a wonderful metaphor for like depression or opression or something, which then promotes a reading where this is about the politicians and sophists (ok basically athens was hyperdemocracy in theory but that came down to making persuasive speeches, regardless of their validiry, sophists in particular were teaching people how to do this) being the prisoners, who are trying to predict the opinions of the masses (who are carrying objects) instead of dealing with the actual truth of things (by going outside) which is what matters.

So I mean incredibly bad optics to have the politicians be the prisoners?? I think despite the relevance to the book this reading also takes away a lot. Why are they imprisoned? Why are the men carrying things?

Like it’s not even the worst thing to come out of the republic but i think this was a major blunder.

Huh that’s certainly a new interpretation

I think people usually take it to mean that the politicians are the puppeteers pushing distorted narratives for the masses, who are the prisoners, to believe in

I mean the analogy seems fine based on your description??? Not especially good, but at least…serviceable?
I’m still a bit unsure, though, because I feel like I’m not getting the right point from this.

I wouldn’t be surprised were that the case & I like that interpertation plenty fine-- GLAUCON IS PLATO’S BROTHER??

How are you going to know that if you can’t read though?

Seems pretty ableist of them to not make it a spoken line
