I never use air dryers because I heard they blow bacterias directly into your hand and I’m a serious germophobe

Exposure even to non-antibacterial soap kills bacteria. It physically rips their cell membranes apart, attaching to the lipid layer and busting it like a balloon. The idea that soap does not kill bacteria at all is untrue. The primary mechanism of action with soap is removing the bacteria from your hands, but it’s not as if it just moves it elsewhere. Here’s one particular recent study showing antimicrobial properties of plain soap.

Per the FDA, antibacterial soap is useful in healthcare settings but it is generally considered unnecessary in home settings. Here’s another article with the same conclusion and a bit more explanation. Here’s the FDA’s rule on the matter.

There are literature reviews showing antibacterial soaps aren’t much more effective than normal soap at reducing the bacteria levels on your hands: some say the difference is small but exists, some say there is no difference.

People love to repeat “soap doesn’t kill any bacteria, it just moves bacteria away from your hands”: not only is this straightforwardly untrue (it does still kill plenty of bacteria), the implication (you should use antimicrobial soap) is also just outright false and against mainstream guidance, antimicrobial soap is not recommended for household use

Re: hand driers vs paper towels, evidence is split, it’s difficult to say, but I wouldn’t make this claim with confidence. A couple recent reviews say there’s not enough evidence to say one way or another whether paper towels are more effective than hand driers

(Just to not be cherry-picking, this earlier review recommends paper towels, though it’s smaller in scope)

It doesn’t hurt to use paper towels over hand driers and AFAICT that’s the general direction of advice but it does hurt to be in the habit of confidently making medical claims without sufficient backup
