as is i think the reason doubles is the official format is because of wobbuffet (and specifically because due to circumstances that have since been patched out a wobbuffet mirror match was a softlock in gen 3)

tele brought a pure stall team with the only means of doing damage being toxic, burn, a scald, a few weak attacks, and presumably stealth rock, and was also famously a toxic bitch in the community

abr was bringing a bulky team with actual win condtiions and managed to outstall the other guy anyway

really though the tl;dr is that it is extremely understandable why VGC is set up with doubles given stall singles matches can take literal multiple hours for just one battle (not even a best-of-three set) and irl tournaments just can’t deal with that possibility
