it was rather captivating as a on-the-fly math problem wherein i was trying things and then realizing they did not in fact make sense over time. I think I came up with the ~optimal strategy of
take the ratio of the the numerical distance to the lower bound & the numerical distance to the higher bound (default to 0 & 101) & pick the spot that best approximates that ratio in the ensuent distance by squares.
I think this can be equivalently expressed as "take the difference of the upper/lower bound & divide it by the distance in place +1, divide your number by that value & go ~that number of squares down from the lower bound
