The thing is that Undertale Yellow isn’t even that sexist. I mean like it is but it’s the same base passive level that everything is. The characters are written As A Gender and their natures and interests are informed by their gender to a heavy degree, something that literally everybody is always doing in writing, it wouldn’t be that out of place in a standard modern day setting. They use stock characters (e.g. Mother Turned Evil or Plucky Tomboy or what have you) and stock characters come with a gender and they maintain it.

But Undertale itself is like REALLY not sexist, as far as I can remember. Like it’s exceptionally good at not doing this. And the contrast makes UTY stick out soooo bad in comparison. There’s still gender in Undertale but it’s sparing and is generally the domain of, like… old-fashioned monsters and is a thing they do rather than a thing they are.

Like Toriel and Asgore are fairly Gendered in many ways but 1. it kind of works to emphasise their feeling of Immortal and Very Traditional Royal Parents and 2. it feels like gender they have developed in response to society rather than something within their natures from the start, like Toriel’s supposed to be nurturing and motherly and Female that’s how she conceives of herself and tries to behave but she still contradicts it in ways that feel very real. It’s something she tries to be.

Toriel’s allowed to contradict gender in lots of little ways that break from the motherly stock character - obviously she divorces Asgore and she harms you by being overly protective, of course, but she also, like, likes Inappropriate Jokes and she was fully on board to kill One human so long as it was the efficient choice and such. And Asgore is the Male King Protector but he’s deeply soft and fails to live up to Masculine Bravery and, like, has Feminine Interests. They’re trying to fit these roles but they were not born perfectly moulded. They’re shoving themselves in that mould. Visibly

And the younger monsters in Undertale have way less gender their culture basically doesn’t have it. Famously Toby Fox originally made Alphys a guy but it felt wrong so he slapped eyelashes on her and made her a girl. And then she’s no longer the stock character of Anime Loser Guy in the same way! And Undyne similarly isn’t a Female Stock Character, she has a similar thing going on where if anything she’s a male stock character genderswapped. And there’s not tension between nature and nurture here in the same way, the younger monsters are isolated from human culture and haven’f been nurtured to be a gender.

And there’s a bunch of gay relationships never commented on as unusualwhich helps add to that sense. There’s like the constrast between the premodern straight gendered monsters and the modern ones which have no feeling of having been pressued to be a gender.

Deltarune has a bit more gender… and the monsters live on the surface and have Church and such. Which is cool. It’s a nice bit of like. World. I just realised that. Not sure if intentional. Noelle/Berdly is a wildly gendered dynamic, they feel like characters who have been presssured to be genders. Susie is a female version of a male stock character but the specific archetype is also, you know, being defiant, she feels like she’s been pressured to be a gender. They feel like they’ve interacted with it. They know about it. Alphys is a schoolteacher instead of a royal scientist now which changes her gender dynamic. Undyne is still there and doesn’t feel gendered

Like. It’s that when Undertale Yellow pulls a stock character they keep it the same gender. It just feels like it buys in to that system. I guess shallower character writing tends toward Having More Gender In It because you pull from the audience’s preconceptions deploying a cardboard cutout more than you do writing a full person

your claims are probably having to do with the uty team being overall worse designers and writers than toby fox and temmie chang

Yea that’s what I said

could you quote it? i missed it.

It’s just interesting how more shallow writing generally got me to read it as more sexist. And sexist in a way that I don’t think I’dve noticed if it weren’t 1. in contrast to a game that’s good at being non sexist and 2. set in a world previously established in aforementioned game as not having a lot of gender in it, meaning the characters come across less as ā€œgendered because societyā€ abd more ā€œgendered because natureā€
