Cookie Thread Act 3: The Cookie Strikes Back

basically “the ~out of world reasons for why this happened” (vs. ‘Watsonian,’ which is the in-universe ones)

like, let’s say there’s a TV show, and one of the major actors dies, so they say that the character moved to Canada

the Watsonian reason that character isn’t around anymore is that they moved to Canada, the Doylist reason is that the actor is dead so they obviously can’t have him do anything

The point of Aang fighting Ozai is to end the war.
Killing him is just vengeance.

Oh

earthbenders should just bend their entire city toward their enemies like a giant fucking tank

consider how fucking cool it would be to have a CITY invading your city

There’s an argument that earthbenders could just create a volcano under the base of their enemies

I need to write this now

Also the reason shows would censor people punching each other but not people sent to the 1000 Years Nightmare Torture Dimension wasn’t some nysterious hypocrisy or because they thought kids would be Traumatised by punching and not hell misery.

It’s because kids can easily re-enact punching each other but they cannot actually send people to nightmare world

WAIT THATS SO COOL

Probably

Isn’t this the plot of Xenoblade

so for example, children’s TV shows often take strong stances against using significant amounts of violence to solve problems, because if you tell kids “it’s okay to hurt people to suck” or even “it’s okay to hurt people who are hurting people,” sometimes they’ll be like “well Bob stole my pencil, so he sucks, and that also hurt me. therefore I am going to beat him up and steal my pencil back.” which is generally considered undesirable

(ATLA is okay with non-lethal violence – but note that most of it is not the sort of thing that a kid could easily imitate, like you cannot hurt someone in real life by trying to firebend at them)
