ok this is also not a particularly hot take but, while I agree that Aang should have simply killed Ozai, I think that arguments that the showrunners should have had him do things differently need to engage with the obvious Doylist reasons why they decided not to send the message ā€œif someone sucks a lot and is hurting people, it is fine to kill themā€ in their show targeted at elementary schoolers

No one wouldā€™ve blamed him, sure, but I donā€™t think blame was the reason Aang was worried about doing it. If it were, heā€™d have let the Avatar State do it for him.
Itā€™s not for a lack of justification that he chooses not to kill Ozai: itā€™s an active decision to save his life. Thereā€™s no purpose to killing Ozai outside of ending the war, so Aang goes as far as he needs to go in order to prevent that and no farther.

like, letā€™s say thereā€™s a TV show, and one of the major actors dies, so they say that the character moved to Canada

the Watsonian reason that character isnā€™t around anymore is that they moved to Canada, the Doylist reason is that the actor is dead so they obviously canā€™t have him do anything
