i am a firm believer in technological progress, and a firm materialist, but I think the advancement of technology is too interlinked with the entire rest of history for us to be able to do anything approaching statistical predictions regarding it

most of all, i greatly resent the whole of intelligence being reduced to computation, because i know for a fact that’s not the case

i’m smarter than a computer because i don’t completely shit myself and die if a programmer forgot to include a bounds check on something

creates a theory about everyone being attracted to their mother
names it after the guy who gouged his eyes out after realizing he was in a relationship with his mother

it doesn’t matter if the computer can do more computations per second than me if its’ thought processes are inherently rigid, and you can’t simulate the complexity of sentience by simply making something complex - it has to be intelligent as well!

my first listening to every radiohead album has been huh. thats like. okay. i can tell its really good i understand why but i dont think its for me.
then i go like huh. i kinda want to give it another go. okay maybe another. i like this bit alot. actually i like this bit alot. this is the greatest album ever made actually

what i find insulting about the current ā€œArtificial Intelligenceā€ trend is that there seems to be an active effort to not understand the processes underlying the models, and to instead place those models further and further within a black box

because we don’t understand the nature of conscious intelligence, so therefore anything we don’t understand must be conscious intelligence. it’s trying to create skynet through means of object impermanence

actually neural networks are in black boxes because they generally aren’t understandable, not by choice lel

Learning by trial and error

the issue is that you have millions or billions of nodes and no human is capable of understanding what they all do and why

then why the fuck aren’t you trying to understand them
if the intent was actual research and not the production of empty capitalistic hype, you’d be trying to demystify the damn processes

scale

lots of people are trying to understand them, it’s just that this is, like, hard

that’s what i mean, orange; i’m aware of the data science, but it’s still willing blindness to not even attempt to meaningfully analyse the data and instead to simply assume that if you throw enoughof people’s tolen data at it, it’ll become good

at a very basic level neural networks aren’t complicated

you basically just multiply and add lol

the issue is that you do those operations a metric fuck ton of times, and each individual operation has no discernible meaning

arete i’ve been paying attention to the Top AI Researchers at Google and OpenAI and such
they are not actually trying to understand how the machines work

hear me out. use ai to understand ai

all they’re trying to do is trying to make them bigger, not to actually make any meaningful advancements in the field
