i feel like the mohjang anime character in question might not care much for her position in the monastary

It’s a question of, like, the design process. Like, where does character concepting start, is the art made first or are the voicelines written first, how much guidance do the artists get when they’re creating characters, etc. And perhaps how much this is, like, different cultural attitudes toward the style of dress, I suppose?

Like Xenia dresses like a very normal rich girl to me, like she doesn’t read as rebellious at all, I was shocked she was supposed to be so. Does she read as rebellious to the Chinese and/or Japanese audiences of the game? Or did the artist who created her have unusual sensibilities, or did they not have a particularly rebellious character in mind? If it’s the latter, were they asked to create a rebellious character and just didn’t really listen, or was the “rebellious noble” backstory tacked on afterward by somebody else, or what?

well the character is designed to be appealing
i don’t think they care much for the backstory besides a tack on to the character

But that’s a cop-out answer! Sure, it’s not ultimately extremely deep, but there’s still a process for these things, you know? Gacha sludge doesn’t come fully formed from the earth. There is probably a virtual Committee of people trying ot make this character Maximally Appealing. Isn’t that fascinating? How the hell does that process work? I’m so curious

there isnt a deeper thought process to some things it just is what it is

For a gacha game they do be thinking about markets

What? Just because you don’t htink it’s worth thinking about doesn’t mean that “there’s no deep thought process to these things and they just happen”

If they cared about real art they wouldn’t have made all the femboys literal children

Like there isn’t an extremely deep thought process to this. Nobody involved was attempting to create Art. But they were attempting to create a product that would sell, and that’s interesting to me

i dont think they put as much thought into it as you think
things like this sell easily

this mahjong game is ultimately designed for capitalism, and capitalism is most profit with little effort

This game made $150 million in its first year. Somebody is thinking about this. It doesn’t emerge fully formed form the earth! There is a person whose job it is to come up with mahjong soul characters! I wanna know what they were thinking!

Like, every single object and thing around you is designed to make the most profit with the least effort. That doesn’t mean they’re thoughtless and uninteresting. It’s the opposite. Every little design element is created to 1. sell as well as possible and 2. cost as little as possible. I find the little things people do to appeal to consumers or cut costs super fun to think about
