ok ok so technically both are feliNae and classified as non-“big cats” in the scientifical and latin definition
In English
the subfamily of felidae known as felinae are differentiated from their inability to roar (caused by a non floating hyoid bone in their throat)
neither the cheetah or the puma can roar with cheetahs commonly chirping or purring, and pumas are infamous for their haunting screamlike vocalizations
all big cats are pantherines, part of the genus panthera
these are lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, etc
but not cheetahs or pumas
those are actually the last living members of their genuses: acionyx for cheetah (acionyx jubatus) and puma for puma (puma concolor)
I don’t understand this but I like it
but this is where we get to the fucked up part
There’s more?!
duh
ok so cheetahs are fucked up because they are so inbred almost every cheetah is genetically identical
leading theory is that approximately 10000 years ago some kinda natural disaster happened to drastically reduce cheetah population
and all current cheetahs are the inbred ancestors of those small few left
they’re all basically clones of one another
this is shown today in the fact that almost every cheetah has the same twisted kink in their tail, awful immune systems, and how skin grafts are accepted easily no matter the individual
it was the dinosaurs
dinosaurs ate most of them
tldr this is why cheetahs should be the alabama state animal
can scientists fix this
or nah
there have been studies on it
but how do you go about reintroducing diversity that just isn’t there anymore
you roll dice
i mean i guess they could kinda use the same method as the quagga project
but that’s a whole other discussion
Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help
