Ofc I mean I fully get it, I was gonna remove it because I don’t like the clutter but I’ve decided to keep it because I’ll get used to it and I also do have skill issue when it comes to misgendering (not on purpose, I’m genuinely just stupid)
for our transphobic users I reccomend leaving it on so you know what pronouns not to use
Noted
I feel like language evolving to omit third person pronouns is the next natural step. It would probably take a very very long time though, long after we’re dead
Singular:
I
You
(Third person singular neutral pronoun)
Plural:
We
You* (ideally this gets reworked. It sucks that its the same as singular you. A plural you would be immensely useful)
They
Currently “they” is the placeholder for third person singular neutral pronoun but not everyone is happy about it
Although, this new system would only work if he/she/it disappears. If they are still in use then this doesn’t work since thered still be attachment of gender identity to pronouns
So maybe just in a parallel universe there was never gendered he/she when language was created. For convenience. Although he/she was created for convenience at the time im sure
English doesnt use gendered words. Im not sure if you guys know but in many languages you cant really say “this person is non-binary”, for instance, the same way you can in English. You can only say “this person is a non-binary (man)” or “a non-binary (woman)” due to mandatory gendered affix to nouns. You can get away with a lot of gender-neutral sentences in English. I wonder if that has a correlation with English speaking countries being generally more queer friendly than others. The language allowed for it a tad more. Language influences so much including personality even
It is SO inconvenient that the plural and singular second person pronoun are the same
If you are in a situation where you want to use the plural, your options are:
-
use it, addressing multiple people, and pray that the person youre speaking to doesn’t misunderstand you, and think youre talking about only them
-
you can say “you people” which might sound more serious than your intended tone
-
you can say “you guys” which might sound more casual than your intended tone
-
you can say “y’all” which makes people take you considerably less seriously unless youre from southern US
-
“you all / all of you” also can sound a bit more serious than intended, to me
It would just be so good if there was a perfectly neutral, short, 3 letter pronoun for this. It would allow for better communication
I have heard of “yinz” but im not sure how serious it is
some languages didn’t have written gender before westernization which i also find cool
written gender including pronouns
it’s dialectal
it’s from pennsylvania, esp around pittsburgh area
I now pronounce you Chloe, wholesome Loaf/Based Kitty
Annoucning FoL’s first dedicated pronouns moderator to make sur e your pronouns are up to code
Y’all can say whatever you want, but I’ve been using [y’all] whenever I want, and if that makes people take my word “less serious” then this is the first time I’ve heard of it.
My natural choice of words is “you guys” but some ppl don’t perceive it as gender neutral so when typing i might use y’all but put loud it’s always guys
Never heard of it, so it’s definitely not getting popular. You just have to get used to language. In any country, a normal person doesn’t ask “why do we use these words”; they just memorize whatever they need to use in their life. (Whether it be daily or for personal use.)
titles look worse now
or did i not regresh my page
yeah pronouns show i refresh but the title is still weird
