or actually you could have a spiked gauntlet in the same hand you’re carrying the scimitar, so if you get disarmed you can continue to have a weapon + free hand in the other hand for spellcasting. magus wants both at the same time in different hands, iirc (not sure)
normal unarmed attacks (without a gauntlet) deal 1d3 nonlethal damage and they trigger attack of opportunity from enemy if u attack them (unless u have feats for unarmed combat) (so this is rly bad)
attacks with a normal gauntlet are similar, still 1d3, but u can choose them to be lethal or non-lethal (u can buy a gauntlet and wear it, or medium and heavy armor come pre-equipped with gauntlets on both hands)
a spiked gauntlet deals 1d4 damage and is treated as a weapon attack, so it benefits from some bonuses, and doesnt trigger attack of opportunity when attacking, and keeps your hand totally free to do whatever at all times (unless aret rules otherwise) (so this seems like a completely free and good item to have in the early game)
locked gauntlet lets you lock the current item you’re holding so it can’t be disarmed, but also you’d be clumsier and can’t drop it and u’d need to spend time unlocking it
all gauntlets can’t be disarmed
