It seems that this jewelry is quite valuable — your best guess is that if you could find an individual buyer looking to actually purchase it outright, you could sell it for about 280 crowns. Of course, if you’re selling it to someone who’s just planning on melting it down for the materials, you’d expect to get about half that (less, if it were just metal arranged in fancy ways, but some of the pieces have gemstones as well).
(I randomly determined how much the price would be off by + which direction)
Canary waits for his appraisal, with shaky confidence in her own.
He takes a moment to try to remember the names of the various nobles in the area. “Baron Dalin, huh? What d’you think he’s doing?”
He presses his fingers together, then pulls them apart again. “Ah, I’d guess quite a few of them are nervous about that. But the manual is less focused on tactics for a fighting force, and more focused on personal self-defense…”
(@May, you see Canary linger in the shop for quite some time — are you following her inside, or waiting for her to be done?)
Arius grimaces in silence upon hearing the price of the bestiary. The price makes sense… It makes sense, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt to hear such a steep price!
“I would like to buy the theology book.”
“Of course. It will take me a few hours to copy it for you, will you be picking it up this evening or tomorrow morning?”
He preemptively flinches away.
“I think he’s tied up somehow. He doesn’t keep his roads repaired and he’s keeping a lot more soldiers than necessary even though the problem down south as I understand it isn’t likely to flow into his doorstep.”
He lowers his head.
“And why would someone as important as him arrive in relative incognito by staying with a jeweler instead of the lord-mayor?”
He pauses.
“I’m no detective. I’m a Puluran, fish out of water.”
Eventually, he’s completed his assessment, and he sets the jewelry down again. “The boggards chose their victims well, it seems — the materials here have held up quite well. I can offer you a hundred and thirty crowns for the set.”
“If I had to make a guess, I think he’s going to get militarily involved. Bad for everyone.”

“Under normal circumstances, I would like to pick it up by tomorrow morning, but…” Arius takes a deep breath, and sighs. “If possible, I would like to pick it up by this evening.”
(It doesn’t seem like he’s lying to you about the value of the jewelry, or of the materials composing it. But you get the impression that, although he implied that he would be selling it for materials, he is likely planning to resell at least some of it as-is to others he knows through the jeweler’s guild, who would then sell the jewelry as finished pieces.)
The bartender nods. “That sure sounds bad to me,” he echoes. “But if I were him, and trying to hide, I wouldn’t just stay with some rich craftsman, I’d go in disguise. Think about it — he’d attract a lot less attention that way, don’t you think?”
Canary gives the Jeweller a look incidentally before her mouth manages to move. Her face gives a clear message ‘I know you’re not going to salvage all of it’.
(waiting to see if the man responds to it.)
“Of course, that would be less than the value of the finished pieces,” he adds smoothly. “Sold individually to someone looking for jewelry, they’d fetch…”
He goes through the pieces, naming their prices, but doesn’t attempt to increase his own offer to you. His intended subtext is not subtle: he thinks that he’s an Important Man With Excellent Connections who could fetch a better price, and he’s clearly not parsing you as the same, and thus thinks it would be challenging for you to get a better offer.
(what is the highest object price he listed?)
(and what’s the difference between that and the second highest)
He nods. “That makes sense.”
“There are refugees in Hazel Ford from the ongoing conflict down south, yes?”
(Early posted oops)
“Is there a place for them in the town?”
