I take a breath and walk over to where the jeweller is sat, my arms by my side. Still. Pretend to be a normal customer. “Hi, I was… looking to try and…”
I restart. “I have some jewellry I’d like you to take a look at.”

I take it out of my pockets and lay it out infront of him. And hope that’s how this goes.
“Ah, well, over the past week or so, quite a few people have asked about The Art of Swordmanship, As Relayed by the Aldori Masters. It’s quite the practical text, though it’s written at rather a beginner level…”
His voice trails off, and he scratches the back of his head nervously.
He notes this before giving his thanks and payment.
“I’m not from this town. I’m…looking for something that I’m not even sure is here.” He sighs, and drinks.
He gently places the necklace he’s working on onto a small cushion. “I see.”
He picks up one of the items and looks at it under a small lens. “And just where did you acquire this, miss?”
“Come on, Grandpa, she’s not a thief,” says the young woman. “Just look at her.”
The jeweler gives her a stern expression. “It’s not safe to judge people just based on appearances,” he says sternly. “I’m not accusing her of anything, but it’s important to take appropriate care with a matter like this.”
“And what’s that?”
“…”
(can I see through the lens from my perspective too?)
I start to think. Maybe it’s actually illegal to take stuff from… things like them. And I should’ve returned it to the city guards or something.
…In that case I should just tell the truth. And hope I don’t get arrested. Because I don’t know. And- they probably won’t arrest me for that.
“There was a series of Boggards. Frog-like… Humanoids. Hostile. They tried to kill me. And a few others.”
They failed.
“This is from them.”

At this angle it’s a bit tricky to get a good look, but you can see a bit of it — it seems like it’s basically just being used for magnification, it doesn’t look like it has special magical properties or anything. Glasswork like that would be quite expensive for most people, but given the sums he likely charges, you would expect it to be within his price range.

(Now that my main curiosity has been answered… I suppose I could buy some books as well.)
Looking around without approaching Jan, Arius says: “I happen to be interested in bestiaries and the Gorumite theology. How much would those books cost?”
((AFAICR, the three are still wet from the rain.))
(could i possibly use this to get +1 circumstance bonus on an appraise check without taking it off him?)

“See, Grandpa? I told you it was fine.”
The jeweler sets down a gold ring and picks up a thin metal chain. “But there’s no harm done in checking, and this way if I decide to verify her story with the bankers she won’t be able to change it.”
He turns back to you. “In any case, it seems highly unlikely that the original owners” (in context, he’s clearly talking about the people he assumes the boggards stole it from) “will attempt to recover their property, and it does not sound like there was any malfeasance on your part, so there shouldn’t be any issue with a sale.”
He continues inspecting the jewelry, weighing it with a small scale, rubbing it against touchstones, and so on.
