He tilts his head slightly. “The Messire, what was his name?”

“Kaver, I believe.”

His face darkens, as he strains to recall memories more than a decade past. “Kaver. Was this Kaver a magistrate, by chance?”

“Former if I recall, but yes.”

“How much do you know about what happened with her brother? Willem?”

His face scrunches like a lemon. “I’m from the Worldwound. Take a guess.”

Drakor frowned, but continued watching.

“I didn’t know Willem as well as his father, you understand. It’s not right, if you ask me, conscripting a man and his son, but it was our baron’s father to blame for that.” He sighs. “But from what I remember, Willem was drinking with one of the other men, and they got into some kind of argument. Next thing you know, they’re drawing steel, and a few moments later the other man is dead. Willem swore before all the stars that it was an accident, but Kaver the magistrate didn’t see it that same way. Ordered the boy strung up.”

He clenches his left hand into a fist. “I’m not saying I condone murder. But… Sten was never the same, after that. Can’t really blame her.”

“…I don’t know if Kaver was one of the magistrates the new baron dismissed. But — I didn’t think much of the last baron. If he dismissed Kaver, well, no surprise if Kaver found that objectionable. But I’d call it a good sign about the man, if you ask me. Can’t speak for what he’s doing with the troops, but it’s not like it’s hard to improve on what his father did there either.”

Canary looks up to the sky.

It’s late afternoon. The sky is overcast, but not nearly as cloudy as it was yesterday. The moon is visible, a waxing gibbous peeking out behind one of the clouds; the sun is blocked, but the cloud it’s hiding behind looks shiny.

If we were to leave right now, what time would we get back to Granitehill?

Wanderer nods, though it is as if a fire is brewing under the surface. “I can imagine. Thank you.”

“I just…wish that the world outside of the Worldwound wasn’t so complicated! I don’t even know why I was sent here when I could be doing things that matter, like aiding in the fight against demons!” His heart spills out like a faucet.

it would almost certainly be dark by the time you made it back to Granite Hill, probably like… 8:30 PM? (unless you tried to double hustle)

He looks at Kamilla’s body again. “I’d say what you’re doing here matters. She might’ve killed that magistrate over what he did to her family. I let her stay here out of friendship. Whatever you do with her, whether she goes free or goes to the gallows, it’ll matter to her family.”

(if I spend more time treating her wounds would she regain consciousness?)

Canary looks to Drakor. Then The Wanderer. Then Lionel. Then to the man.

A release of the pressure. “I’ll admit that I’d like to hear from her before I decide to do anything.”
