[RP] Play-By-Post Pathfinder

Inhale.

“Martyn Kaver entered Granitehill on the third of Gozran. I was unaware of the reason for his visit at the time, but I quickly became aware of the reason. Understanding his reason as a business opportunity, I negotiated a private meeting at night on the hill to the east of the town. We had this meeting successfully and planned on discussing the exacts at breakfast the next day. I did not directly accompany him on my way back to the temple, and did not see him the next morning.”

He focuses his gaze in the direction of the magistrate.

“With the aid of divination, I found his body at the creek the next morning after he was announced to have been missing.”

He scans the room.

“I, in addition to Drakor, Canary, Arius, and Lionel, engaged in an investigation after the fact. We found that the body had been dumped into the creek from upstream. Upon going to the hill east of town, we discovered three sets of footprints, a scrap of clothing, and telltale signs that the initial crime had been committed at that location. The two known sets at the time belonged to myself and Martyn Kaver.”

He scratches his neck.

“We went to a local shop that we believed would have sold the clothing. The shopkeeper narrowed down who purchased the item in question to three people, of which included Kamilla. Upon consideration, we decided to head to the smithy first, though I had decided to gather some of the militia for assistance in case a conflict broke out. Conflict did indeed break out, as hostilities broke out with Sten who was attempting to buy time for Kamilla.”

His eyes dart.

“Upon resolving that situation, we exited and began tracking Kamilla, who had run away in the meantime. A comparison of Kamilla’s tracks to the tracks we saw at the hill proved to be a direct match. Myself, Drakor, Canary, and Lionel successfully tracked Kamilla, who had taken a horse, and were able to capture her. We learned of her circumstances.”

He gives a slight nod.

“I believe that is all of the relevant events.”

“Her circumstances?”

Good.

“Kamilla had attempted to flee to a family friend. We spoke to this individual. He described the circumstances of how Kamilla’s brother Willem died, and that the then Magistrate Martyn Kaver handed down the verdict that resulted in his death. Given this and her later admittances, we came to believe that it was a premeditated revenge killing.”

“As you understand them, what were the circumstances of her brother’s death?”

“As I understand it, Willem was conscripted alongside his father. One day, he was drinking with one of the other men before getting into some kind of argument. This argument then turned violent, with the other man dying in the scuffle. The magistrate whom we know to be Kaver, despite Willem swearing it was an accident, ordered him strung up.”

He nods. “Can you describe your capture of Kamilla? Who initiated hostilities?”

“We tracked her horse to a house. The horse was tied up outside. When we got in, we met the aforementioned individual, who attempted to get us to leave the house and subtly signaled to Kamilla. Canary and Lionel left, circling around to the back of the house where it was getting abundantly clear Kamilla was hiding. Hostilities broke out when I opened the door that the individual was being strangely defensive about. Lo and behold, Kamilla was there and a fight immediately broke out. Which side was the agitators…I would leave up to your judgement.”

He places his hands at his side. Yes, he did it. What of it?

The magistrate nods. “Are you aware of any actions Kamilla took to mitigate the harms of her crime, or to avoid causing additional harm in the course of attempting to evade punishment?”

Your impression is that he’s really hoping you’ll be able to come up with something — it’ll be a more plausible justification for the result he’s supposed to be achieving here if he can point to mitigating factors like that as supporting evidence, particularly of the form ‘she could have done x worse thing and been more likely to escape, but instead chose to do y less bad thing’

“She could have killed me.”

He lets the gravity of the line stick before continuing.

“I was a potential witness. I had shown myself to be a spellcaster, and while I cannot cast a Truth spell, she would have no reason to believe that I couldn’t. She could have even framed my interaction with Kaver as a ‘deal that went bad’ if she killed us both. I do not think she would have had much trouble in a fight against me, for I wield no weapons.”

(Meanwhile, in Room #4: “…and he promised me I’d get it when he died, no one can seriously believe he’d go back on that promise just to help out someone like him…”)

He nods in obvious relief. “Thank you for your testimony. Is there any other information you wish to share with the court?”

Canary is trying really hard to not give this man any visible inclination of holding her attention.

“I have nothing else to say.”

He nods.

It would appear that this reached the ‘ideal’ ending for all relevant parties.

Wanderer will follow movement instructions as given.

“Please remain in your antechamber until I dismiss you, in case further testimony is required.”

As you return, you can hear the magistrate order Sten the Younger brought out.
