…

“Is something wrong?” Paprika closed her eyes for a moment, going over the facts she knew…

“Are you with them willingly?”

“…He never said his name was Wanderer. To you.”

Paprika smiled, pressing her lips together. “Well, I suppose he didn’t. But when you testify before a court of law… are you not asked to state your name for the record?”

“It was quite the interesting verdict. I’d imagine killing a magistrate doesn’t usually warrant mercy from another magistrate. Would you happen to know how that happened?”

Paprika is quite happy to get to look down on somebody for once.

…Literally speaking. Idiomatically, this is nothing new.

“…”

{Former Magistrate.}

“Former magistrate.”

She’s projecting a bit of backbone. It’s sort of working, but not great enough to get her to hurry off the floor.

“All the same.” Paprika spoke dismissively but flinched a little. “So? Can you tell me? Or do captives not get told these things?”

She tilts her head and trembles a bit.

Strangely enough, for someone who looks visibly to be the easiest to get information out of with a bit of staring, she’s not giving you much of anything.

…She’s also not nearly as afraid as she was at the start of the conversation. Meaning something, somewhere must’ve calmed her down a bit.

“You know, there’s nothing wrong with submitting to your betters if that’s what they truly are. But there’s something odd about you. I know you can do better.” Paprika gazes directly into Canary’s eyes. “People like us don’t usually work for people like them. Have they threatened a family member? Or do you act like this of your own accord?”

Canary stands up.

“I’m not being threatened.” That didn’t sound very convincing for the truth.

(could I please roll sense motive to determine what she meant by ‘people like us.’)

(Yeah sure)

(If you got a 1 I was gonna say “Paprika is a feminist.” :/)

Paprika evidently recognizes something magical in you in a way she doesn’t seem to care much about in Wanderer: partly because he’s an adult man (he’s an adult right) and partly because she holds little regard for the source of his magic.

Furthermore, she’s trying to get a rise out of you. She thinks that you’re being abused, and she thinks she can get you on her side if she appeals to your “shared better nature”.

(And I’ll also roll sense motive to see Canary is being threatened)

“So you’re just a natural slave, is it?” Paprika’s borrowing a term from a philosophy book she read once. “Why to Wanderer, of all people? He’s not exactly the type I’d cower and accept this treatment for.”

Canary shakily replies, with a tone that sounds like she’s trying to give an explanation rather than proclaim her status. “I’m. Not. Anyone’s servant.” It’s clear she wants to defend the Wanderer from Rika’s statements, but she’s unable to muster out the strength to, when it’s just a statement and not something as large as a murder accusation (when she had defended him).

She also diluted the term from ‘slave’ to ‘servant’.

(Just wait til canary stands up)
