“Let me rephrase. What was her name for the first time. I have not yet been informed, because you are not polite enough to introduce yourselves.” Paprika huffed.

So she’s hiding it even from the others?

Drakor blinked. “Ah, my misunderstanding. I had presumed you had exchanged pleasantries when you were talking earlier. Her name is Canary.”

The two young folks who were attempting to exclude Arius from their card game finish the game.

“Well, congratulations,” says the one who lost, who had also been the shiftier one. “Guess I’m picking up the tab for dinner.”

From across the room, the woman who runs the tavern looks up, apparently managing to catch their conversation despite the noise. “What did you just say?”

The other young man glares daggers at his companion. “Nothing, ma’am. You must have misheard.”

“Are you gambling in my tavern? You know the rules! Now get out, and don’t come back until you’re ready to apologize for this sacrilege!”

“I’m very sorry, ma’am—” starts the one who’d been acting less shifty.

“Do you think I’m an idiot?” says the woman running the tavern. “You come here, flaunting your misbehavior, and you think I’m going to buy that you changed your mind in a moment?”

Canary tries not to stare or overhear or think about it.

“You just had to open your mouth,” mutters the formerly less-sketchy one as the pair of them slink out the door.

“See?” says the tavern owner. “What did I tell you? You don’t regret it at all!”

“Very well.” The magus then proceeds to wait in an uncomfortable silence.

(Well… So much for an attempt to redeem myself in card games.)

Instead of going after the two gamblers, Arius waits until they are out of sight, before approaching the tavern owner. “Pray pardon me, ma’am, for I am not from around here. May I know what wrongdoings those two have done?”

“They were gambling,” she says in a tone of bitter disgust. “It’s blasphemy against Abadar, it is, thinking you can get something for nothing.”

You’ve never heard of anything like that? You’re not exactly an expert, but this definitely isn’t a widely-known teaching, at least.

((Arius cannot overcome the 10 barrier in any Knowledge besides Arcane and Dungeoneering. :skull: I am not even going to bother trying.))

“I see. Thank you for your enlightenment.” Arius bows down slightly. “My companion seems to have arranged a stay a night at your establishment. I thank you for your generosity.”

Did she let the party stay for free? No.
Did Arius misspoke? No.

Letting one stay inside a building with a roof (especially inside a village) is in itself a form of generosity. Arius is originally not a member of Wanderer’s party, so he has his own tent wherein he could rest in private. However, setting up a tent inside the village would be improper, and setting up a tent outside the village increases the risk of getting attacked.

Being able to sleep without worrying of being killed (or at least, less likely of being killed) is in itself a blessing most freelancers learn throughout their active years.

Having expressed his gratitude, Arius goes to [whichever room/rooms the others are sleeping at], pulls out a bedroll and a blanket, and goes to sleep as well.

It’s pretty difficult to fall asleep, considering that the tavern proper is still full of people and noise, but eventually you do manage it.
