Paprika’s first order of business, after taking note of which way everybody walked, is to pick a mostly-arbitrary direction to confidently stride away from the party in, vaguely glancing around to see if anything catches her eye.

I haven’t been to the bookseller here in a while… but I am not going with that group.

Paprika’s second order of business is to double back in the direction she saw Canary go… to the jeweler’s, was it? (IDK if Canary said where she was going.)

(Paprika’s been here before and thus would be better at navigating, could she roll k(local) or sense motive or something to try to find Canary?)

The jeweler, a human man who’s clearly on the older side, is adjusting a garnet necklace when you arrive, as a much younger woman (around your age, Canary) looks on. He’s clearly quite a wealthy man; his suit is adorned with engraved gold buttons, and he himself is wearing a pair of bracelets set with amethyst stones. The jeweler doesn’t bother to acknowledge you as you enter, though he’s clearly keeping an eye on you, but the young woman gives you a respectful nod.

“Grandpa, there’s someone here!” she says.

“In this weather?” he says in a disapproving tone. Despite the fact that he can clearly see you, there’s a note of skepticism in his voice.

“Yes, Grandpa,” says the young woman patiently.

The nearest tavern, it transpires, is the dubiously-legal Caydenite “tavern” being run out of some guy’s house. At least he does have a house for it, now that he’s running it openly; previously, he was selling alcohol , but without the social aspects of it. The establishment is less crowded than the more tavern-y taverns, and it seems like most of the people present are from the area rather than travelers from elsewhere; they seem rather surprised to see new arrivals enter, particularly in this weather.

The barkeeper himself is a man wearing a pendant with a carved wooden miniature tankard attached to it. He’s also wearing a comically oversized hat, and his left arm is hanging a little oddly at his side. By his right side, he’s wearing a cheap-looking rapier.

Various other forms of nonfiction that don’t fit straightforwardly into one of the other categories! There’s a bestiary (one of the few books with multiple copies already), a linguistics text discussing the difference between the Brevic and Galtan dialects of Taldane, a travelogue purporting to describe someone’s travels in Osirion, a political tract advocating for better treatment of animals…

sure! K(Local) seems fine, Stealth (opposing perception) seems fine

(Given Rika’s background, she would know that there’s also a second bookstore in the town, run by a woman named Bennadetta. Unlike Jan, her shop sells quite a bit of fiction, and absolutely no non-fictional books about non-magical medicine.)

Drakor lowered his mask and attempted to offer a reassuring smile. “I am simply here to browse. Do you have any recommendations?”

(What do I roll to reassure him?)

“How has the weather been treating you, my good man?” Wanderer speaks in a more positive than neutral tone, clearly attempting to break the ice.

“Ah, that depends. Are you looking for information on any specific topics? Also, what languages do you speak? I do have a small collection of foreign texts that I think are particularly good…”
