“Not like what I’m wearing on such short notice,” Paprika hastily adds. “But enough to blend in as a friend of mine. Simple styles are in: it’s about showing off the quality of the fabric and craftsmanship.”
Canary nods again, this time with actual interest.
Canary looks slightly upset at Rika being mean to her companions.
“…Then I’d have to carry this. And… take up a lot of your time, so uhm… thank you for offering, but it’s…”
She trails off.
The tenement houses are crowded (this would not be unusual even under more ordinary circumstances) and mostly located in the area outside of the walled central part of the city. Like the vast majority of buildings in Brevoy, they’re made of wood; they’re “only” about three stories tall, and in some cases the first story is devoted to commercial buildings rather than flats.
It’s not always immediately obvious who you’d actually talk to to learn more, assuming you aren’t just banging on people’s doors (though you can try that, if you would like!), but eventually, you’re able to find a few buildings all together, surrounding a central courtyard-like area (though not an especially fancy one), with the owner living in a cottage within the courtyard area. A sign by the cottage informs prospective renters that they should inquire inside as to rates. Alternatively, there are a couple of groups in the courtyard area that you could speak to — a middle-aged woman with seven children of varying ages, a couple in their early twenties with two children under the age of three and an elderly man sitting with them, and a pair of women spinning as they talk. Apart from the spinning women (one of whom is a half-orc), all of them look human.
Which of the two bookshops are you going to, Jan’s (the one from Wanderer’s spell) or Bennadetta’s (the one that also sells fiction and poetry)?
Wanderer does this, introducing himself as a wandering priest.
which of the groups are you approaching first?
(Would Benadetta’s plausibly be complete enough to have a book on jewelry?
Also, what would the Craft process for making a courtier’s outfit be?)
(The second group)
It’s not guaranteed that Bennadetta’s would have it, but it’s also not implausible — it’s not that Bennadetta near-exclusively sells fiction, it’s just that the other one doesn’t sell fiction at all. To craft an item, you would follow the rules in the Craft skill, which are as follows:
- Find the item’s price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
- Find the item’s DC from Table: Craft Skills .
- Pay 1/3 of the item’s price for the raw material cost.
- Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s worth of work. If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item [as in the base price, not as in the price that you pay for materials] in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.
Action : Craft checks are made by the day or week (see above).
Retry? Yes, but if you fail a check by 4 or less, you make no progress this week (or day, see below). If you miss by 5 or more, you ruin half the raw materials and have to pay half the original raw material cost again.
Tools : All crafts require artisan’s tools to give the best chance of success. If improvised tools are used, the check is made with a –2 penalty. On the other hand, masterwork artisan’s tools provide a +2 circumstance bonus on the check
- Progress by the Day : You can make checks by the day instead of by the week if desired. In this case your progress (check result × DC) should be divided by the number of days in a week.
In this case, I would probably call the outfit a “High-quality Item” (DC 15) rather than a “Typical” item (DC 10) or “Superior” item (DC 20). Taking 10 is allowed and encouraged. There are various other DC adjustments (e.g. you can go twice as fast if you accept a +10 to the DC!) but most of them are I think not relevant to you.
Upon hearing Canary’s… graciousness, Paprika’s voice became a bit more sharp.
“You’d be more helpful to me if you could actually participate in the most important parts of the mission. I can just sell the dress once we’re done.”
She was entirely stopped outside the store now.
“Are you serious about this or not?”
a courtier’s outfit costs 30 GP/300 sp, so if you (for example) took 10 for 18 on a Craft (Clothing) check, you would make 18*15 = 270 sp of progress in 1 week, so you could finish in slightly over a week
(the crafting rules have as many as several weird and unintuitive effects but at this time I am not homebrewing them. If people (by people I mean you, since I think you’re the only one doing mundane crafting frequently) start to get really bothered by the unintuitive parts, we can see about making adjustments)
(In that case, Paprika is stopping by Bernadetta’s first, mostly because it’s her favored bookstore and she wants to pick up books for herself.)
(I didn’t realize artisan’s tools were a Thing, can I retcon Paprika as starting with them)
“…Hello,” says the man in his twenties, sounding a bit nervous.
“We don’t want to make any trouble,” says the woman in her twenties. “We can move if you’d like.”
The elderly man looks you up and down multiple times, then makes a sort of “hmph”ing sound.
(sure)
I… really don’t want her to.
I don’t wanna feel like I owe anyone or that anyone has to spend so much time on me.
…And… it doesn’t feel like it would. Actually help with the mission.
I go silent in hopes she’ll leave it alone.

(Giving her masterwork artisan’s tools because It’s Her Job and also She’s Really Invested In This)
(Canary is refusing because she doesn’t like having things done for her, because she doesn’t think it’s all that helpful, because it’s a lot of time, because she’s nervous to agree (thinking it would be perceived as selfishness), because her clothing is a mishmash of Whatever typically and having a coordinated outfit (thought what she’s wearing now looks fairly so, even though it isn’t exactly the best- or fits.) She’s also afraid of you, not more so than most people, but she doesn’t really want to deal with the burden of you ‘doing something for her’ and thus feeling like she owes you.)
