Wanderer follows the group without complaint. He was fine to let the watch handle it themselves, but Arius…he wanted to be involved. So that decided itself.
Still, Wanderer understands himself to be distinctly unprepared here.

“Understood!” Arius follows the buff guard with a solemn expression.
((…Zone IRL would be very delighted.))
((By the way, how many guards are present for this capture mission?))
…me when I write up a description of the guards and then forget to bring that description from my word processor to the forum
The patrol they put you with is double the size of the patrols you’ve seen before, four people rather than two; it seems they’re erring on the side of caution here, even if it means fewer Watch members patrolling the streets. The four members include a human man who can’t have been an adult for more than a couple years, a greying human man with a thick beard, a half-orc woman (on the tall side for a human, but unusually short for a half-orc), and a muscular man who could almost look human if not for the slight point of his ears.
Drakor nodded. “Have fun.”
He went into his room and began carefully cleaning his weapons and armor.
Eventually, you reach the docks. This particular dock area is located downstream of the ford; it seems to mainly be used by ships shipping things downriver.
The guards approach a foreman. “Point out Meren of Whistle Creek,” commands the greying one.
The foreman indicates a tall but scrawny man currently struggling to carry a large crate.
(Drakor/Rika/Zelsh, do you guys want to skip forwards in time a bit so that Canary can be synced with you?)
(My 50/50 skills are impressively bad)
(I’m happy to but also sleeping soon)
((…he did not say that Arius cannot do anything without his permission.))
Arius casts Detect Magic at Meren.
He’s not detectably magical, even once you get close enough to actually be within the spell’s range.
(Same)
(And leafia is aready asleep)
((I forgot, but essentially magic-casters do not emit magical aura unless they have recently casted something, correct?))
((If so…))
Arius informs the party that he did not detect any magical aura from Meren at the moment, though that in itself does not prove he is not a cult member.
Wanderer waits.
His first guess was wrong. Not particularly surprising, though quite unfortunate.
(Generally they would not, although there are some semi-exceptions, e.g. the bonded object of a wizard with a bonded object would emit an aura)
(but to answer your actual question, being a caster isn’t enough on its own)
The greying man leads the squad up to Meren, who’s clearly starting to get more and more nervous as the group of armed guards (plus two other people, one of whom has a weapon) gets closer to him.
“Arius. I think I was wrong about who the leader is.”

“Meren!” bellows the greying man. “Don’t move and don’t cast! You’re under arrest!”
Meren’s eyes widen, and he takes a couple steps backwards, eyeing the water. As he does, the greying man advances on him with his shortsword and tackles him to the dock. The young man snaps handcuffs around his wrists, grinning with excitement, and then starts turning out Meren’s trouser pockets.
