With the exception of your companions, some of whom are from Dalinâs territory, the people in the Auberge mostly donât know that much about Dalinâs territory. Still, youâre able to piece together some details from the information they do have.
- Hazel Ford is larger than any individual settlement in Dalinâs territory, and conveniently located on the river, which is a major trade route. Itâs fairly common for people throughout Dalinâs territory to show up at Hazel Ford to trade, even though itâs not actually within their barony.
- The settlement nearest Dalinâs manor house is a village named Glovewort Valley, though it is not the largest settlement in the barony.
- The gay merchants that you met previously sometimes purchase wares sourced originally from Dalinâs territory, including particularly sturdy boots from Ravenâs Nest and paper and sturgeon jerky from Sturgeon Bounty (the actual largest town in Dalinâs territory, on the river, but somewhat upriver from Hazel Ford). However, they generally only purchase wares in places that are close to or actually on the river (though of course they do sometimes get wares that were originally from further north but have been brought down to the river)
- Some of the staff at the Auberge have heard complaints from people who had to wait multiple days for an audience with Baron Dalin, while receiving either no explanation, a blatantly pretextual explanation, or a basically legitimate-sounding explanation that the people complaining were still mad about. Youâve heard the same rumor before, but generally from people somewhat less wealthy than the clientele here at the Auberge â apparently his behavior extends to people of means as well.
(so flauros didnât teach her a spell)
As you walk into the building, Canary gives you a strange (for her) look.
Inquisitiveness.
And as you all (assumedly) gather to talk it through, a quick look at her would reveal: she looks rather bad compared to when you last saw her. The bottom of her pants seemed to have been recently drenched in water, and the look on her face is one of utter fatigue. Still, as you talk, she listens intently and waits.
As your story finishes, she looks around in confusion, but doesnât seem to ask any questions, as she begins to steel herself to discuss what sheâs learnt.
ââŚâŚâŚI had. Started to walk around to try and find. Clues. Then I had found- a young boy from a⌠not really a neighbouring village- farther, shopping alone. Here.â
âSo I had. Talked to him, and learnt his father recently attempted to petition Baron⌠Dalin.â
âSo I walked him home.â She doesnât really linger on this part, trying to undercut you all potentially viewing that as strange.
âAnd his father, who was working in the fields. Had told me he tried to petitioned him on Oathday, and then. The Baronâs servants asked him to come back on Sunday. Despite the fact the petition was. About a deadly monster attacking their village.â
âAnd uhm. His manor, the father said, was. Big, white, and a little. Dirty. For a baron. And his servants were scared.â
âBut then.â She looks to the side, as if sheâs concerned her retelling of the next part would make you all, provided you have any real loyalty to Baron Rodin (whom most of you donât), judge her. âI went and talked to. Two other people. One said he had potentially petitioned the baron before for. Deerstalkers. On⌠Erastus. I think. And he listened to that and did it right away, andâŚâ
This part, she gives an indescribable look. ââŚWhen I talked to another villager, she said in. 2689. The Baron pensioned off her sisterâs family, after her sister died. And he didnât really know the family. I think that was⌠before he was actually a baron, I think? He mustâve been young.â
Canary takes a deep breath. Sheâs not done.
âThen, when I had came back hereâŚâ Sheâs moving between statements quickly. Trying to wrap this up. âI talked to Jan. Again. And, I donât really know what you all got from him, but he said the Baron purchased half of his medicine catalogue.â She says the word âhalfâ like she herself just realised how much that is. âApparently.â
ââŚAnd I have an in with him. So, if anyone has any more questions for him that we could ask. Iâm. Able to. Temporarily.â She finally concludes.
Drakor considered. "Were you able to learn what kind of medicine books? Perhaps he is seeking treatment for a disease or performing medical experiments?â
I flinch and⌠Canary shakes her head. âIt wouldâve been. Too odd to ask. I can- but, considering it was that much of the stock, it probably is just a bunch of general books about a specific thing. Probably.â
Drakor nodded, too deep in his own thoughts to notice the flinch. âThatâs fine. Even knowing he is looking into medicine is valuable.â
âDo you know what circumstances the pensioner died?â Drakor asked. âAnything health related?â
I shake my head again. âIf it were a disease that⌠heâs been interested in for⌠that long, heâd probably get those books earlier. Years earlier.â
I move slightly backwards, hoping the prying eyes go away.

âThank you, Canary. I think this is quite helpful. Was there anything else?â Drakorâs tone was a little odd, almost as if he was asking a question he thought he knew the answer to.
I look at the towering man oddly, and shake my head once more.
âWell, Iâm glad somebody was doing something useful.â Paprika glances irritatedly at Arius. âNow we have an approximate date on when the baron started his strange activities, as well as confirmation that he wasnât just an unreliable person from the start.â
âI already suspected he wanted books on medicine, because he didnât purchase a single book at Bennadettaâs, whichââ Paprika grits her teeth ââdoesnât stock them. Bennadetta also thinks Jan might be hiding something, given he exclusively wears a hood all day, but I donât think thatâs relevant.â
âTomorrow, Iâm going to the jewelerâs again to pick up an expensive commission. If the necklace is of acceptable quality, Iâm planning to ask him about another commission, and then ask him about the baron with a customerâs money on the line. You should come with me was my valet so itâs not suspicious.â
I give a look of confirmation. She said Iâd be there in the store, so⌠I have to be there.
You all get the sense Canary is a little pleased her activities are deemed useful.
