“Medicine books… it likely means someone’s ill, though specifically taking out such a wide variety is odd. When treating an illness, you scan for one book and take it out–” Paprika makes a sniping motion, “–while a wide sweep is stranger. If we could find exactly which ones were taken, it’d be more helpful, but I doubt Jan would just hand us that information.”

“I’m going to try to find Amelie at dinner, give her the newest gossip, and see if she’ll refer me to the Lord-Mayor regarding the cult, the corruption in the Watch that Wanderer reported, and my suspicions on Baron Dalin. If she doesn’t find my requests urgent enough, I’ll hint at something extreme like demon-worship – with the cult and the hot topic in the news lately, maybe I can get an audience.”

“Oh, I was threatened by the watchman. That’s a great hook, actually.” Paprika giggles. “He said I wouldn’t be able to walk in Hazel Ford ever again without losing my limbs, and asking for protection from the Watch would hardly be appropriate given the clear corruption there. I’d love to petition the Lord-Mayor regarding my personal safety.”

Canary’s body begins to quiver, as if she were the one threatened directly. She looks around rapidly to see if anyone bothers to respond to this - which they don’t seem to have any similar extreme reaction.

(Canary was not informed of what happened with the whole watch thing, just about Wanderer and Arius’s venture on one of the arrests.)

I try to stand as still as possible, trying my hardest to not bring attention to my.

Canary’s right hand flips the other way in response, and- I move it behind my back to hide it.

Paprika looked at Canary strangely and tilted her head. “Right, you don’t know about that. It’s not actually a problem.”

“We were investigating a symbol of Flauros painted in a disused cellar, discovered last Starday. The cellar had been locked up by members of the Watch, but someone washed it away with water before we saw it, despite the locks being intact. One of the two guards, Rafau, who went with us was actung suspiciously and knew quite a bit about Flauros, so I confronted him, and he confidently denied that he was a demon-worshipper, but not any involvement with the symbol, despite the fact that the lock showed no signs of being picked. The tip had been made in the first place by tying a note to a fencepost. When Drakor and Zelsh went out into the alleyway with Rafau, he attacked them. When I came out and confronted him with my suspicions, he offered us a bribe of 10 gold crowns each.”

Paprika paused after giving her premises.

“That was enough to figure out what had happened.”

I stay silent, and try not to let my concern show on my face. I need to just note this down and move on. I can’t linger on my…

I subtly bite my tongue to try and dissaude myself from making my worry audible. It hurts a little.

Paprika frowns at Canary’s silence. She didn’t even try to guess?

“He clearly washed away the symbol, but wasn’t a demon cultist himself, and had some knowledge of how the symbol was drawn. He was running a racket, making money off the cult’s activities, and some member of the cult reported it.”

“Drakor and Zelsh brought him to the ground, mananged to not kill him, and two guards brought us to the Temple for a truthspell, where everything was exposed. He threatened me specifically, but he and the cult members he named were all arrested, so I doubt there’s any real danger. Certainly none for you.”

“He never stated explicitly under the truthspell that he had named every cult member, though, so there still could be somebody out there, which is what I want to bring to the Lord-Mayor. I am just a helpless sixteen-year-old girl, after all.” Paprika snorts. “I’m not afraid of them in the slightest. He claimed I’d get out of Hazel Ford if I’m smart, but truthspells rely on belief. I could claim the Abadaran Merchant’s Conjecture is false under truthspell if I thought I had a proof.”

I give a confused look back, but I quickly try to hide it with a nod, fidgeting with my fingers behind my back.

Drakor frowned. “He threatened you even after being caught?”

“After being caught, but before giving names. I suspect his ‘friends’ he threatened me with have all been arrested by now. And if they’re not, I wish them luck.” Paprika idly reaches into a fold in the fabric of her skirt and produced out a sickle, which she turns around lightly in her hands – the dress must have been designed specifically to conceal it. “It’s not as if they have an army, and they don’t know what I’m capable of beyond brilliant deductions. But neither does the Lord-Mayor, so I’m sure he’ll have an audience with me.”

She puts the sickle away exactly in its place with practiced hand.

“Are you planning to talk to the Lord-Mayor tonight?” Drakor asked. “And is the enemy aware of where you are staying?”

“No and no. I’m talking to Amelie tonight, as I’d like to see if she can put me in touch with the Lord-Mayor to meet tomorrow. It’ll give me more status to be referred there as a respected guest of a seemingly trusted associate of his than a random concerned citizen with no status.” Paprika fidgets with the ruffles in her dress as she speaks. Maybe I should give Canary means to hide a weapon. It’ll be hard with the cut of that dress… “And I’ll speak alone. I don’t want our entire group to flag as people investigating the baron if he’s not receptive.”

Drakor put up his mask. “You are certain there is no way that the conspirators could know where you are staying? You have said nothing that could give it away?”

(Pretend this is replying to the most recent post)

…I did mention that while taunting him.

“The guard, the one who knows who I am, has been in the Watch’s custody since his discovery. How would he even possibly conspire to attack me? Do you think they let him meet with random cultists?”

“You presume that he is the only person in the Watch who is involved.” Drakor put his hood up as well. “That very well may be true. It certainly was not the entire Watch, or else he would not have feared discovery.”

His eyes bored into Rika. “But are you willing to bet your life on that?”

“It’s not betting my life. It’s betting an inconvenience.” Paprika frowns at Drakor’s concern. “Don’t underestimate me.”

Drakor maintained eye contact. “I do not doubt your capabilities in a fight. It is your ability to defend yourself while you sleep that is my concern.”

He folded his arms. “I think we should take shifts standing guard tonight. If there are any conspirators left, they will be desperate, especially with so many of their companions arrested. They might attempt something risky to silence you.”

Canary looks down.

The edges of her pants are muddy and a little soggy, and her boots are rather dirty.

She looks embarrassed about this, given her environment, but doesn’t do anything, despite the fact that Prestidigitation would clearly get rid of it.

“Do what you want, I don’t care. It’s hardly possible to silence something that was shouted in the Temple of Abadar.” Paprika crosses her arms, with her right hand resting on her concealed sickle. “Canary, I have something else I need to measure for your dress. Could you come to our room with me?”
