Initiative order:
- Spider
- Bugibugi
Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.
Drakor examined the weapons closely. âAn unusual design for that knife,â he said as he pointed to the four sided blade.
Taking you by surprise, the spider is first to act. It launches webbing at you from behind the tree, chittering. The webbing falls short of its target, landing on the grass.
Mechanics notes
When one character is aware of the other at the start of combat, and the second character is not aware of the first, there is a surprise round! During a surprise round, the character(s) who are acting can take a move action or a standard action, but not both. In this case, the spider is taking a standard action to target Bugibugi with a special attack that lets it launch webbing.
Also, since the spider won initiative, it will get to take its first âregularâ turn in round 1 before Bugibugi.
In this case, the spider rolled a 7, plus 5, for a total of 12. This special attack targets âtouch ACâ, and tutuuâs character has a touch AC of only 11, so this looks like a hit⌠except that the special attack the spider is using has a ârange incrementâ of 10 feet, meaning that if its target is farther than 10 feet away, it takes a -2 penalty for every increment past the first 10 feet. In this case, this works out to a -8 penalty (this would also be true if Bugibugi were 41 feet or 45 feet â being 1 foot over is enough to push you into the next range increment), for a total of 4, easily a miss. To make matters even worse, Bugibugi has partial cover from the tree, for a +2 bonus to AC.

((If a kid with presumably less than 18 STR could cut a quarter into the tree, then I doubt our combined forces will have a tough job felling this tree down in minutes.
))
Arius wipes sweat off his face, and says: âSee Vin? Cutting the wood in the direction of other trees leaves us with a widowmaker. The name comes from cases where the suspended tree sometimes falls on the men underneath it. So whatever you do, do not stand under the tree we just felled!â
He then walks to the felled tree, and quickly adds: âOh, and be careful for the splinters as well,â before cutting the wood further into pieces, before transporting them to the handcart.
The spider moves out from behind the tree, advancing slowly towards Bugibugi, and launches another burst of webbing past his head.
Mechanics
The spider has moved a bit (although less than its full speed), bringing it to 40 feet away from Bugibugi, so it only takes a -6 penalty from range increments, and Bugibugi no longer has cover. Unfortunately for the spider, it rolled a 4 on the die, so even if it had zero penalties, it still would not be hitting.
Bugibugi roars âWITNESS ME!â
Bugibugi charges the spider
((Iâm in range, right? Lucerne Hammer is a polearm so I have even more range. Also I think charging with a polearm doesnât put me right next to spider but stops 1 square away right?))
((Also idk if my weapon was already drawn, was it?))
She nods. âA starknife. I wouldnât recommend it if youâve never used it before. My understanding is that it can be wielded in one hand, or thrown at the target â Iâve seen the technique demonstrated, and the man wielding them was able to use them quite accurately, even though he didnât look very imposing â but, well, itâs easy to imagine how it could go wrong.â
ââŚBut Iâm not married,â he says, in the tone of someone who thinks this is a legitimate point.
He joins you in cutting the fallen tree and loading the split logs onto the cart.
((I assume yes, since you specifically went into the forest looking for a fight))
((Yes! You wouldnât be in range to move up as a move action and take an attack as a standard action, but youâre in range for a charge, and the edge of the tree canopy isnât blocking you))
((Make an attack roll! Donât forget to account for the +2 bonus to your attack roll that you get from charging))
