I wasn’t talked about fanfics either… I usually avoid those as well.
All of my examples comes from novels/webnovels with original characters/concepts. (Like twilight, with the love triangle… just to mention the most famous one. And I’m not talking about fanfics of twilight characters, I’m talking about the original novel(s) here.)
Just because a story has fantasy races (dwarves/elfes/trolles) It isn’t a fanfic of LOTR (Unless it explicitly stated it plays in the word of Arda/middle-Earth.)
Just because a story has wizards or witches, it isn’t a fanfic of Harry Potter.
I might even argue, that just because a story has lightsabers, it isn’t a fanfic of Star Wars. (but at this point lightsaber and Jedis are not really an unseperatable concept. And Jedi is explicitly a Star Wars organization)
You get the gist of it, just because a novel has a specific concept which is found in other novels, most of the time, neither of them is a fanfic of the other.
Romance isn’t a fanfic exlusive concept. While romance between characters from well-established franchises is. I hope you see the difference. (and the same goes for harems)
Like if I write a short romance (just to name two semi-famous characters people here are probably not familiar with) between Gu Yuena and Lee Yura. If I manage to not butcher their personalities, (which would be hard, knowing both of them are straight women…) that’s a fanfic.
If I write a romance between a silver dragon with human transformation and a demon hunter. That would be an original concept. (even though Gu yuena is a silver dragon, and Lee Yura is a demon hunter.)
Although if I write about a 30.000 year old silver dragon from a cultivation world with spirit beasts and a dark magician who betrayed the demons and became a newbie demon hunter in a virtual reality, I probably wouldn’t get away with at least one or two allegations, since those are way too specific concepts to not recognize as a Gu Yuena/Lee Yura fanfic, even if I insist that they are not same characters. Just because the OG characters are straight, and mine are probably not, it wouldn’t be enough to avoid those. This would still be a fanfic (even if I don’t acknowledge it as a fanfic).
Idt fanfiction or romantic fanfiction is inherently bad

writing differently from canon isn’t necessarily a bad thing and especially most of the time the motive isn’t bad it’s to be creative I think it’s good there’s sites where you can tag fandoms so original works from authors such as webcomics manga etc don’t actively get plagiarized purposely or accidentally
it all comes from creativity. As someone who’s written fanfics it’s primarily a way to get better at writing while enjoying yourself. Rand happiness

I don’t say fanfics are inherently bad. I just hate them on a personal level.
I feel fanfics are disrespectful towards the creator of those characters most of the time, and this heavily stops me enjoying those stories.
I tried writing a fanfic once, but I couldn’t dare to write down more than a few sentences. It’s just isn’t my style. I don’t have the same connection than the characters I actually made (and remade/remolded a few times) and I actually care for.
Luckily I made enough distinct OC characters, that I don’t have to use foreign media to make my rooster any brighter.
