college applications are certainly competitive, of that there can be no doubt

but that’s just one part of a much much much larger system that by and large has very few processes that are directly competitive like that

it is because i am making a joke

meanwhile in some countries students are literally numerically ranked and you have application exams for middle and high schools in addition to universities

that is a competitive system - we have a single point of true competition, really, and it’s definitely disingenuous to call the entire system competitive off of that imo

you can do perfectly well for yourself here just going through public schooling through high school and at no point along that entire journey are you going to be hampered by not being the single best student

i mean the entirety of us culture is competitive, im not just saying our schooling is; our culture is and that applies to our schooling

this is also a thing in the US depending on where you live :joy_wolf:

I missed like 2 years of high school and I still got into some great universities. I think I would explode and die in the US

gonna need a source on that because I have literally never heard of this ever for public schools

also highkey if it were actually competitive we’d have better educational outcomes :joy_cat:

like it really is not (and I do wish it were to a more real degree - even as somebody who is extremely type B/not motivated by competition, we’d probably be better off if we were actually more competitive in general)

extra curriculars and personal statements dont carry nearly as much weight here. im pretty sure theyd carry more weight if people cared about them but because we like, culturally have decided they arent important they have become not important

as long as you arent writing your personal statement while drunk and you have the required prior learning you have a good shot

It happens for magnet programs within public schools.

mind you if you dont have the requirements (me, person who missed 2 years of high school) it matters alot more. I had to use my innate charm

The idea is to try and recruit a bunch of smart kids to your meh school to bump your stats up.

I have not seen myself in either sort of situation because I actively avoid interacting with other people in person.

Literally how it works for us too.

Constitutional law exam.
30 people - 3
2 people - 5
1 person - 6 (me)
