I mean this is a practical question I think you need to be able to point to the specific harm that “making up a bunch of questions about the slides you can ask yourself” causes rather than talking about generative AI in education in the abstractn

I’m not asking for it to teach the entire course or to replace a person’s education. That’s not something I trust generative AI to do right now.
I’m just saying to use it to create question banks that you can practice with. The technology’s strongest advantage is being able to synthesize data, so I’m saying to give it data and tell it to synthesize it.

In general I think it’s silly to pretend “generative AI” is one thing with one use case. It’s not a brick. There’s different pieces. Just because it’s being sold as better as it is doesn’t mean it doesn’t have applications. It works good for whatbeatsrock dot com and I assume it’d work good for turning some slides into review questions though I’ve never tried. So like

can’t find a source. can’t really bring myself to spend a lot of time looking for it atm. i saw something recently that they can even fuck up synthesizing information to the point where people who were using it to do things like create summaries decided to stop because it was getting something wrong regularly enough where they had to start rereading transcripts and at that point, they could already write their own summary. every time i’ve thought generative AI would be good at something and have personally tried it, it’s also been significantly worse at than i thought, so i’m fairly biased against it generally.

may’s things about using it as a valid medium or w/e are probably true but like i fucking hate how companies are using it to make shittyass EVERYTHING to cut costs and people always point to the replacement of the weavers that one time

and i know that if the AI can at least write some crazy twists and a couple good action scenes they will use them to mass produce FUCKING SHIT and it’ll probably sell b/c consumerism and god i hate the idea
especially with the publishing industry where iirc you have to make and sell a LOT of books for it to be profitable at all (this is heresay but like, you get the idea) lord knows they’ll use AI to make like thousands of things and then have people comb through the “best ones” that they think they can turn into a hit or w/e and NO i don’t want to read your fucking ai written books you fucking idiot

may’s things about AI art have been exclusively focused on images and i just. most of my rage goes towards AI texts anyways which is typically what i mean by “ai art”

i felt similarly, but i am running out of things that i think it can actually do (at least in their current iteration, but it also seems like they’re running out of data to meaningfully improve them so lmao)
i should save some of these, but there was another example summary i saw it produced and when compared to the source text it was kind of horrifying how bad it butchered it. it was like a technically plausible summary, but no human with any understanding of the context would have ever written. idk. i think about how you can summarize harry potter and kingkiller chronicles as “orphan boy goes off to wizard school in order to defeat a dark lord”, and they’re both technically correct, but misses anything that would be actually useful to say about them. like it could easily be as reductive as that in its summations.
