At one point Xifeng’s husband gets fed up with her and secretly takes a second wife illegally in the city. It is illegal to marry two people at once. It is illegal to marry without permission of the family. It is illegal to marry during a period of family mourning. It is illegal to marry during a period of national morning. This marriage was illegal four times over.
Xifeng finds out about the marriage, and graciously invites the woman to stay in the family mansion and treats her very kindly. And then enlists her servants to essentially force her to have a miscarriage and coerce her into suicide. Then the problem is gone! As the second wife is dead.
