This is correct – at level 4, Magus (as well as other 2/3 casters) gets access to second-level spells, which is the point at which you start adding the bonus spells known you get from your Int modifier. Before level 4, when you’re adding the extra spells you get as part of levelling up, you would specifically add first-level spells.

Tangent that is not relevant to Magus

At certain levels, half-casters (like paladins and rangers) have “0” listed under spells per day, rather than “—”. For those specific types of caster, they would get spells at that level only if they get “bonus” spells from their ability modifier (so if someone was playing a paladin with a Charisma modifier of 12 or higher, they would get 1 first-level spell slot at level 4, but if they were randomly playing a paladin with a Charisma of 11 or lower, they would get 0)

For equipment, you look at the value listed as “average” for your class (for Witch, 105 GP) and get that much money to spend on starting equipment. You will almost certainly want to purchase a component pouch. Since witches aren’t proficient in armor, you don’t need to worry about spending money on armor, but you may want to purchase a light crossbow and/or a simple melee weapon as a backup weapon for situations where your spells and hexes aren’t relevant. The rest of it is basically up to you, but if you’re looking for a set of “basic” equipment that is reasonably useful for your class, you could consider the Witch’s kit. You don’t have to spend all your money if you don’t want to, any money you don’t spend will just be money your character starts with (e.g. if you want to pay someone to do something, bribe someone, buy gear that you realized would be useful after the campaign started, etc.)

You also automatically get an outfit worth 10 GP or less for free

in 3.5e Concentration is a skill that scales off of Constitution

Besides “more hit points” and “better Fortitude” saves, the big benefit of Con in Pathfinder is that you die when you reach a number of negative hit points equal to your Con score (which can be pretty relevant, especially at lower levels – a character with a Con of 14 vs. a Con of 10 only has 2 more hit points, but there’s a 6-point difference in how many hit points they can lose before dying). With that being said, putting a Ton of investment into Con is rarely necessary – basically no classes want to dump it entirely, but your 14 is perfectly respectable

Generally speaking yes, casting a spell (without casting defensively) within an enemy’s reach is an AOO trigger

With casting defensively, you make a caster level check (1d20 + your caster level [1 for a first-level magus] + your casting ability modifier [+2 for Int 14] + any other modifiers [e.g. if you choose to take an attack roll penalty with spell combat, or if you have feats or traits that give you a boost]) against a DC of 15 + double the spell’s level. If you succeed, you cast the spell normally and don’t provoke an AOO. If you fail, you still don’t provoke an AOO, but you don’t cast your spell at all, and (if it was a non-cantrip) the spell slot is still used up

casting a spell that involves a ranged touch attack (rather than a melee touch attack) also provokes attacks of opportunity even if you successfully cast defensively (just like using a ranged weapon typically does)

Like, just to make sure I’m understanding what’s happening, you put down yourself as having a rank in Lore or Performance or Profession, and it changed the total modifier you have in Handle Animal and K(Geography)?

Short answer: it depends on the lock but usually not, it’s more likely to work on locks made from poor-quality materials

Longer answer

Generally speaking, when you try to damage an object, you need to take into account both “hardness” and “hit points”. For example, a 1-inch-thick wooden wall has a “hardness” of 5 and 10 hit points. When you damage an object, the “hardness” is subtracted from how much damage you deal – so if I was trying to break the 1-inch-thick wooden wall, and I hit it with an axe for 7 damage, it would actually only take 2 damage. If I hit it twice with an axe for 7 damage each, this would be much worse than hitting it once for 14 damage, because the hardness applies to each attack separately.

In addition, “energy damage” (fire/acid/cold/electricity/sonic) usually does half damage to objects, although it might deal full damage if it’s a case where the energy type is particularly relevant (e.g. lighting something flammable on fire)

(there are some extra rules that I’m leaving out because they aren’t relevant to the acid splash scenario)

How do I bring a gun

I wasnt expecting for us to use it ftr i was just filling the sheet (coz when it says 0/2 i feel obligated to fill it in to 2/2), and i didnt realize that you werent planning on doing it. Im down to not be using it yeah, I’ll edit my sheet

i also don’t see a reason to use it, we have enough players that we don’t need a little pity points, we have so many skills

Btw this can be circumvented (in many cases) via your level 2 feat - you deliver your spell effect via striking with your weapon on the second attack, and you dont actually “cast” cast the spell, so as long as it’s an enemy-affecting spell, you won’t trigger the enemy attack of opportunity, even without casting defensively (this is how it should work afaict but only 99% sure)

There might be other feats that let you cast spells in enemy threat range without triggering attack of opportunity, i dunno

(Also just to be a little more precise) - people have a threat range (for attacks of opportunity) thats equivalents to their weapon reach range, and not just in immediate proximity

If they use a polearm with reach attribute, the threat range is a donut ring - can hit between 5-10 ft., but not in immediate vicinity)

Also large enemies have longer reach, regardless of weapon tupe. Like a huge enemy with a non-polearm weapon would have a huge square of threat range around them

Does anyone wanna have a mock 1v1 duel while we wait? :flushed: (non-canom story)

Basically we take our sheets as they are and meet at an arena standing some distance from each other and fight to the death. In a private PM betwen just us two

(This might not be a fair battle at lvl 1 for casters im realizing)

Im itching for combat

I wanna kill stuff

alright lets fight

I use mage hand. I fling dirt at you. Your attack roll goes down by one.

You cleave me in two. I die.
