(also, you have acquired a masterwork falchion)

(my aon.prd is bugged so I have no idea what this is, what it does, what its stats are, etc etc. I am in character)

Canary walks to the side, as far out of the way as she can be, with her… sharp metal thing.

(going afk)

(“Masterwork” on a weapon means that it gets a +1 bonus to hit, but (unlike a magic weapon) doesn’t get any special bonuses to damage or count as magic. The +1 from being masterwork does not stack with the +1 to hit from a basic magic weapon, or from similar effects (like the Magic Weapon spell). A falchion is a perfectly good weapon (2d4 damage, with an 18–20/x2 crit multiplier, so it’s good for crit-fishing builds), but as it is a martial weapon, Canary is not proficient in it.)

Despite being decked out in scale mail and brandishing a sheathed scimitar next to his hips, Arius doesn’t stay too long with the master-of-arms, as he follows the other spellcasters to the quartermaster.

“I happen to know how to use a wand and read scrolls, yes.” Arius says with confidence.

“May I ask what types of wands and scrolls you have available?”

“Zelsh fights using longswords. Got any good ones?” Zelsh asked politely.

“I’ll have a word with the quartermaster. Not a spellcaster but… close enough, I suppose.”

“Most of what we’ve got wands for is spells you might want in a pinch, but won’t need every day, and where it’s not too important they be cast by an expert. Cure Light Wounds, Mage Armor, Faerie Fire, and the like. Had to import the wands of Faerie Fire all the way from Qadira, we did, but apparently Sarenrites are good for something. The scrolls have a bit more variety, since it’s worth picking them up even if you’ll only ever need to cast the spell once or twice, and that’d be a waste of money for a wand. Is there anything in particular you were hoping for?”

“Of course!” He takes down a beautiful longsword with a pommel carved to resemble a dragon’s head. “How about you give this one a try?”

The blade swings easily through the air, balanced to stay reasonably agile even while you put quite a bit of force into your swings.

Kerra’s office is starting to become rather crowded at this point, but she takes the arrival of yet another party member reasonably well. “Another caster? What do you do, and do you have training in wands and scrolls?”

“I’m an alchemist, madame. I make extracts. Wands are within my grasp but scrolls are not.”

“An alchemist.”

Kerra is too professional to try to poach you from ‘the project her patron literally hired you for’ to ‘providing alchemy services for the estate’, but she’s not keeping the fact that this would be tempting entirely off her face. She’s heard alchemists can do all kinds of amazing things, like make people immortal or turn quartz into diamond or create potions of personal-range spells, and while she doesn’t believe all the rumors even just the third would be incredible.

“I was just saying, we keep wands of Cure Light Wounds in stock, if that’s something you’d be interested in. I can also throw in some alchemist’s fire and a tanglefoot bag, if you think you’d be able to use them.”

(Kerra doesn’t actually know if alchemists have anything to do with alchemist’s fire, but she’s guessing they do? It’s literally in the name.)

*checks how wands and scrolls work*

I have severely mistaken scrolls for spellbooks, and it seems that learning from scrolls is impossible for magi. With that in mind, I will seek practical uses of these items.

(Why not just ask for a spellbook?)

I am not going to make Arius ask for a spellbook. He’s not shameless enough for that!

*checks Magus Spell List*

Huh… Mage Armor is not part of magi’s spells. Interesting. Unfortunate too, because my UMD is +4, so that’d give me a 25% odds of activating them.

“While I myself would appreciate means to heal myself, I am afraid I would not be proficient in using them…”

“Do you perhaps have anything that could weaken my opponents, something that lets me attack from a distance, or perhaps just… Grease?”

((…y’know, technically I could have Arius ask for a Cure Light Wounds wand, and make him give it to Wanderer since he’s the party’s de-facto healer-cum-leader.))

Lionel doesn’t press the topic

“That would be much appreciated. Oh, and anyone can use an alchemist’s fire. We just make the stuff - though I do have the best throwing arm of the group, so I guess I would use it best?”

The rule is really poorly written, but the consensus online seems to be that maguses can learn from scrolls (if they make the appropriate skill checks and the spell is on the magus spell list), if that’s something you were hoping to do

(())
((–wait, only from Magus Spell List? That… is kinda odd, considering Magi can learn from Wizards’ spellbooks and vice versa.))
((–regardless, if Arius can learn from scrolls, then he’d take any available; even if they are useless.))

“It’s perfect!” Zelsh exclaimed after a few swings. (Any changes in stats from the longsword Zelsh already has?)

She looks through her records. “We’ve got a wand of Magic Missile. Missing a few of its charges from over the years, but it should do. And I can get you a scroll of Ray of Enfeeblement or Grease — but do mind, if you’re trying to cast from a scroll, it’ll only last as long and be as difficult to resist as a spell cast by a novice who’s barely smart enough to learn wizardry at all.”

“Great!” She unlocks and retrieves the items. “Here you go. The wand has forty-eight charges left.”

If she’s annoyed about whoever decided to spend down charges from a fresh wand rather than using the one that was already missing charges, it only leaks through a little.

[you have obtained: 1 wand of Cure Light Wounds (at CL 1) with 48 charges, 5 vials of alchemist’s fire, and 1 tanglefoot bag]

[It’s Masterwork – it will give him an additional +1 bonus on his rolls to hit, although not on damage. Let me know if you need any help putting it into the sheet]
