[RP] Play-By-Post Pathfinder

The ones who were gathering together the villagers are still doing that, the ones who were present when the body is found are mostly waiting for further instructions

depends where you’re going, if you went to do something that might overlap with murder-relevant locations they’d have concerns (since they don’t know whether you were involved with the murder, and they want to be sure no one destroys evidence)

You [and anyone else who is interested in going to the central square] travel to the central square, near the temple, accompanied by one of the militia members who was by the creek. Most people are huddled with their families, murmuring about the missing person; Savil is near Messire Kaver’s wife, with a militia member watching him suspiciously. When you arrive, Savil leans over to the militia member and starts gesturing in your direction.

“Alright, listen up!” says the militia member. “That Kaver man – he’s dead!”

Kaver’s wife bites her lower lip and looks around, eyes wide. Savil glares at you. The crowd’s whispers intensify, but you can catch fragments of their words:

“…so many strangers in town, something was bound to happen…”

“…blessed Pharasma, judge his soul fairly…”

“…did you hear the sorts of things he was saying yesterday?”

“…Mama, I’m bored, can we go back home…”

“…better catch the killer soon…”

[it hasn’t come up in character yet but it’s getting really awkward to write around it, so I’m just going to tell you all that the wife’s name is Nyna]

You see some tracks! …on closer examination, though, they’re your own footprints.

Searching upstream, you’re able to find a spot with clear signs of disturbance. The rain has washed away most of the footprints, but you do see one near the bank of the river – it’s on the smaller size for adult footprints, but clearly an adult’s footprint nonetheless. The pattern on the sole suggests that the person who left it was wearing shoes with leather soles (or similar), not the woven bast fibres that some people wear if they can’t afford even that.

As far as you can see, the rain has washed away the trail of footprints, but fortunately there’s another sign of the trail: two lines dug into the dirt, as though the victim’s feet were still dragging on the ground (though not his full body, unlike what you observed from Canary’s attempt at dragging him).

You don’t need to roll anything just to find ‘jobs that people are blatantly hiring for’, though if you wanted to find ‘jobs that you’d have to do a lot more work to find out about’ it’d be Diplomacy (to gather information). In any case, it seems like most people are preoccupied by the murder at the moment, but if you’re looking for someone to pay you a bit for short-term work, your character would know of a few options locally – Sten the Younger is willing to pay people to cut wood from the woodlot and/or to supervise the process of baking said wood into charcoal (to heat his forge), the Gendel family’s been looking for help with planting their crops, and there’s a standing bounty for dealing with giant spiders (paying 3 sp per spider). Apart from that, you could see if anyone is interested in purchasing spellcasting services, and you could also try and convince Nyna Kaver to pay you for something – she looks richer than just about anyone here.

Drakor stiffened, then straightened up from where he was kneeling by the river.

“Hey. Tracks.” He looked at Canary. “Want to follow?”

((Hm… I’m satisfied with the former.))

The death of Messire Kaver is horrible, but people still need to continue living, and in Arius’ case, living means earning money to put food on his table and pay rent at the inn.

((…well, no. That would be absurd. I -Zone, the player- may lack common sense and humility, but even I understand that “asking a widow to hire me for any random job after she lost her husband mere hours ago” is inhumanely inconsiderate.))

((What would spellcasting services even entail…? For the time being, I will cross that off my mind.))

Arius goes to visit Sten the Younger to inform him that the freelancer is willing to go cut wood, and asks him whether anyone else is also already heading towards the woodlot so he can join their group.

Sten the Younger greets you cheerfully, despite the situation. “Good to see you again. I think most people are a bit distracted right now, but I can send Vin with you.” He claps his youngest son, Vin, on the shoulder.

From what you’ve seen, Vin isn’t exactly the most competent (there’s a reason his father gave up on teaching him smithing), but surely he can’t manage to screw up chopping wood too badly, right?

Arius chooses to avoid the topic of homicide, as it would only bring unease to the people.

“Alright Vin!” the freelancer said with smile and confidence. “Let’s go train your body, shall we?”

After waiting for Vin to get his gear, Arius sets off towards the woodlot.

((Could we have an arrangement where Arius borrows an axe in exchange for a couple bits less from the payment?))

Canary quickly runs up to him and looks down.

{I think about complimenting his sight, but that could be a little weird}

“Alright. Let’s.”

Canary quickly compares her own shoe-size to the small footprint Drakor found.

(also, looks to see if it has any unique designs she could identify by)

Zelsh quickly realized he wouldn’t be of any help in investigating the murder and remembers about the bounty for killing giant spiders which he’s far better suited for, so sets out in sesrch of some giant spiders to kill for the bounty on them.

Drakor begins following the tracks.
