You still don’t see a second one, but considering that there are two mounds, it seems pretty likely that there’s a second one in the other mound — it’s not impossible that whatever lives there is (say) hunting in the rain, but it doesn’t seem like the frog-person would need two mounds all to themself.

From what you know, your best guess is that it’s a boggard, a type of anthropomorphic frog that lives in swampy areas, and common enough that you can easily recall quite a bit about them. Boggards tend to be hostile towards other species and even other clans of boggards, and don’t hesitate to hunt and kill other intelligent creatures (even to the point of killing intelligent humanoids as a coming-of-age ritual), but they’re not animals — they’re only a bit less intelligent than humans on average, and it’s not impossible in principle to negotiate with them (they’re people who tend to kind of suck, not wild animals or beings of pure malice).

Unfortunately, as boggards are native to swamps, they tend to be much less impaired by swampy terrain, even considering all the rain — your mules are struggling [it is difficult terrain for you], but for a boggard it would be as easy to walk across it as it would be for you to walk down a paved street. Boggards also have a few unique traits, which they commonly use to their advantage in battle: their croak is so terrifying that it can strike fear into the heart of those who hear it, sometimes to the point that even experienced warriors feel compelled to run from them, and their sticky tongues can make it difficult for those who get close to flee again.

Based on what you can see of this boggard in particular, you’d guess that it’s more martially inclined — boggards with other talents (such as their priests) tend to be much older, and this boggard clearly hasn’t undergone any of the physical changes associated with old age.

“Boggards,” Drakor said. “At least one, probably two.”

“…?” It does not seem like Canary knows what a Boggard is.

“Are they enemies?”

“They’re like frog people,” Drakor said. “Mean, native to swamps, fairly smart. They hunt people sometimes. They have a terrifying shriek and a nasty tongue they could use for grappling.”

He shrugged. “As for whether they’re enemies… that’s up to them.”

{There’s seven of us. Two of them. They… probably. Should know not to attack. Even with the terrain advantage.}

{Should I say that out loud to warn the… Boggards?}

((Good news: Arius knows what a Boggard is.))
((News: He still waits to see what the party leader will do.))
((Bad news: There are no other good news.))

You can remember the basics — hostile frog people, live in swamps, commonly prey on other humanoids, and so on — though you don’t know as much about how they fight as Drakor. You’re pretty sure they usually live in villages larger than this, but even with the rain it’s clear that they aren’t managing to somehow hide a bunch of extra mud piles somewhere, so most likely this is just an unusually small group for some reason.

He rubs his temples.

“Hmm…what am I looking at?”
