(m assuming fixing this enough enough for a handcart to safely go across with mending/prestidigitation/etc is impossible.)

I uncomfortably shake my head.

He sighs. “Well, alright then. Have a good day, miss.”

I stop a bit of ways away from the travellers to get water, then continue walking.

The water in the river continues to be clear! Really unclear why Murkbrook is called that, given that this is the state of the brook.

The rest of your trip back to Hazel Ford is basically uneventful, and you make it back to the town by late afternoon. Your clothing has definitely gotten a bit muddy, but it’s nothing a Prestidigitation can’t fix. Compared to yesterday, there are definitely more people offering boat services across the water, or you can also just walk if you’re willing to tolerate getting wet.

I make some noise of annoyance, and continue to walk.

Great! You can make it across the river no problem, unless you consider getting water on your clothing to be a problem. Welcome back to Hazel Ford!

(You’re currently a few hours later than the other group, so if you have things you want to do separately from them, you definitely can, but if your next step is going to be to reunite with them, we will probably need to pause your part until the other group ‘catches up’ temporally.)

Canary’s pace slows down to a crawl as she moves firmly to her closest immediate bench.
(im fine with waiting for a bit)

Drakor approached the younger of the two guards.

“A point of clarification - has the threat in the hospital been conveyed to the higher authorities within the Watch?”

He looked around at the rest of the group. “To be quite honest, I’m not really following what’s going on here in this cellar, but I’d like to make sure this second issue doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.”

The younger man nods. “The same guy who told us you were here told us what you said about the hospital.”

“Still,” says the older man, “it can’t hurt to make sure they’re taking the threat appropriately seriously. Especially considering that it might be time-sensitive.”

(Your impression is that he’s basically making excuses to stop with the current investigation and get you guys to go do something else (especially something else that would be fairly dangerous).)

Drakor frowned. That was odd, he thought. His impression of that guardsman had been of an experienced man, who was committed to eliminating the arsonist threat. Certainly not the sort who would try to get eyes away from this investigation.

No, that did not make sense. Not unless… Ah. Perhaps he believes we were involved in some way and does not want us to tamper with the crime scene even more? Sending us away would allow him to call for backup.

But we are not involved. The cultists had already made their mark before we arrived. Unless one of us went out and cleaned it last night? But what motive would they have? I’ve been with almost everyone since Granitehill, and Rika would not want the extra scrutiny that attaching herself to our party would bring…

Drakor looked at the younger guard. “Might I talk to you outside? It is getting rather cramped in here.”

He blinks. “Uh, sure?”

He follows you back out the door into the street above.

(as I walk by, are the tracks I noticed earlier undisturbed?)

(i.e. could I follow them later outside into the street?)

(the stretch of tracks nearest to the door is crisscrossed by the tracks from the younger watchman Flee-ing out the door, but that isn’t enough disturbance to prevent you from following them)

“Forgive me if this is overreaching, but might I ask if your friend is normally like this? Perhaps this is because I’ve only just met him, but he seems rather out of sorts.” Drakor lowered his hood and rubbed his forehead. “I’m starting to get concerned.”

“I guess not. He’s been acting… funny. Weirdly formal.”
