Holy aura
(Ah okay. Thanks. I didnât know what one looked like either so he wasnât the only one who didnât.)
The Abadaran diligently records your testimony. As you speak, you see the other two guards move in to take hold of Rafau by either shoulder. They still donât seem to entirely believe you â or rather, they believe youâre telling the truth, but not that you didnât find some sort of clever wording loophole â but just in case, they want to be on guard.
âGive me my spell too!â demands Rafau, his composure gone.
âAs I said, you will need to testify to the actual charges under dispute ââ
âIâll say whatever you like, just give me the spell! Do you want my money or not?â
âVery well,â says the Abadaran, casting the same spell on him. Once again, the same guise flickers over his face for a moment, before passing.
âAll they have is conjecture !â says Rafau. âGuesswork! Iâve been serving on this force for decades. Iâm no cultist! Do you really think Iâd risk my life for the kind of plot he just told you about?â
The Abadaran sighs. âThat was not what you were asked to attest to,â she says. âI believe you were asked to denyââ (she makes eye contact with Rika for a moment) ââwhether you know the cultists and whether you were involved with the symbol in the cellar.â She looks at him expectantly.
âHow should I know whether Iâve met them?â he says. âItâs not like theyâll just tell anyone who asksââ
âA question cannot be true or false.â
âCorrect.â Zelsh commented.
âDid you, or did you not, involve yourself with a demonic cult for financial gain ,â says the Abadaran.
Rafauâs face is red, his breathing heavy. Sweat is dripping from his forehead. âI wouldnât have let them burn down Hazel Ford!â he says, practically shouting. âYou know who it was who tipped off the Watch? I think it was one of the cultists. Theyâre the only ones who knew the right information, besides me.â
He wipes some sweat from his brow. His ranting is getting steadily less coherent. âIf you ask me, Iâd guess they were mad about having to cough up money to their betters. But itâs their own fault. If they hadnât been stupid enough to go along with what I suggested, theyâd never have been in trouble. Ignorant fools, all of them. A god like that doesnât care about them, no matter what sort of childrenâs stories they believe about dragons.â
Heâs saying this under a truthspell, so presumably he actually believes it, but his opinion does not seem⌠entirely objective.
âAnd you!â he says, jabbing his finger at Rika. âYou could have just taken my offer. Youâd have been better off. But as long as they live, my friends will never forgive you for what youâve done. If youâre smart, youâll get out of Hazel Ford while you still have two working legs.â
The customers in the bank are openly staring at him. One of the bankers is trying to hide behind the counter; multiple customers are hiding behind a decorative pillar. Someone has placed her hand over her toddlerâs ears.
âI, ah, think that should settle it,â says the Abadaran. âWas there anything else we should clear up before the spell wears off?â
This question seems to be directed mostly at the party.
âI think Iâm plenty well-off getting to watch this.â Paprika finally smiles, and her voice sounds delighted. âWhat do you think I use my money for?â
âAsk him whoâs involved with the cult. Any major players we should know about, links to important people? He was making a lot of money, after all.â
âZelsh doesnât think so.â Zelsh replied.
âIâd appreciate it if he told us about his contacts. Would make everything a whole lot easier.â
âYeah. My friends are correct.â Zelsh said with a nod.
He looks to Rafau.
âWho knows? Might help your situation as well.â
âWhy should I tell you anything? I doubt itâll make a difference to my sentence.â He thinks for a moment. âBut on the other hand, at least the b-â (he makes a sort of hiccupping sound) âdisreputable person who sold us out would pay for ruining what we had.â
He starts listing off names. None of them are people youâve encountered by name since your arrival (you may make a K(Local) check if you want to identify any of them anyway), but from the expressions people are making it seems some of them are familiar to at least some of the people here.
The muscular guy is still at headquarters! Your companions, however, are not.
