“And what do you plan to do afterward? Where did the rest of the party go?” Paprika wrinkled her nose a bit – hopefully they weren’t off embarrassing her for being associated.
All of those things are described as at least sometimes having a companion animal (/”familiar”/”animal vassal”), though sources disagree on whether this is truly universal. These companion animals tend to be smarter than ordinary animals, like a wizard’s familiar. But unlike a wizard’s familiar, they additionally serve the same function as a wizard’s spellbook; some sources seem to think that they personally channel the knowledge and power of the witch’s patron to directly instruct them in magic. The book that seems to think witches are a particularly evil variation on shamans claims that if you’re fighting one, you can often severely hamper them simply by killing their animal vassal.
(And it turns out that the selection of spells the Witch can prepare each day is limited to those stored in the familiar, which are selected at level-up and can’t be changed-)
Drakor shrugged. “I was going to clean my armor and then find Canary. As for the others, I think some of them were going to talk with the Watch.”
He tilted his head. “What were you going to do?”
(None of you even know what I’m making fun of Atlas for)
Canary pulls a frown.
She selects three books: the ‘already having copies’ relevant books on clerics, a book that seems to have a vaguely heavier focus on swordmages, and one of the two books that refers to the cackling thing that sounds more polite about the concept.
She walks up to Jan, books stacked high leaning on her torso.
(consider yourself lucky I’m too tired to plan out my elaborate revenge)
“Well, at least they’re not making vigilante arrests.” She didn’t really seem to care what they were doing.
“I’m out of errands to do until tomorrow. I was going to work on a project and do some light reading in my room.”
(hey wait how come when I make fun of you you always have enough energy to plot exacting vengeance but when may does it’s “ohhhh im too tired wehhh”)
(this is unfair)
(youre right. I should save energy on enacting my revenge on you. I should just shoot you.)
“What sort of project, if I may ask?” Drakor asked politely.
(finally some recognition around here)
(took you long enough)
He totals up the prices of the books. “That will be twelve crowns and two links,” he informs you, his tone a bit nervous. “These two will be ready by midday tomorrow. Is that alright?”
Do I really have to make polite conversation with him? He’s stuck with me.
Paprika glanced briefly over at the desk clerk, then back to Drakor.
“A sewing project.”
Drakor perked up. “Ah, right. You are a seamstress, yes?”
I nod, rubbing the tips of my thumbs as I pass over thirteen crowns… since I. Need change. Why didn’t I stockpile on links so I didn’t have to…
Breathe.
Just one more thing to do until I can. Stop. For today.
I didn’t… spend time thinking how I was meant to approach this.
I try my best to sound amicable. And… more making small talk than… “Barons. Tend to like it here. Apparently.”
That’s not enough. He’ll just… politely agree. Think. “It’s… good they’re willing to be. Well read?”
“In a sense, yes.” The literal one. “Many seamstresses overcharge terribly for anything fashionable despite having no taste at all, so it is a useful skill. I’m making Canary a more suitable dress.”
He counts out your change and sets it on the counter in front of you.
At your statement, he furrows his brow in confusion, thinking it through for a couple moments. “Oh, you mean Lord Dalin, from up north? Yes, he’s been quite an excellent customer. Why, shortly after he took power, he bought out half my collection of medical texts — it’s good to see a baron taking such an interest in that sort of thing.”
Drakor considered. “How much do you charge?”
I palm the coins.
(Sense motive: Is he lying about which books the Baron took an interest in?)
@discobot roll 1d20
“Ah. I’m… sorry to…” I stop. And hope he doesn’t give me a weird look.
…Medical texts is. Concerning. For the baron. Because that means he might be- sick.
