Stick took note of the conversation, but did not participate and instead began muttering quietly to himself.

“If any of us dies to maple syrup, I will know whose fault it is,” Santiago mumbled.

“That’s very interesting,” Deryn bobbed his head, taking that fact into account. “How much syrup would you need?”

Stick chuckled, though he still did not speak.

At least, not to any of you.

(Is Stick a quiet villain? To contrast Spruce and Yew?)

(an excellent question that I will refrain from answering)

(though he is perfectly sane and has an extremely normal and legitimate reason for randomly talking to himself)

“It would depend on the method,” Evelyn considered. “Probably less than a cup overall. Or, if you were trying to do it the difficult way, a gallon or so.”

Suddenly noticing the squirrel, Santiago’s attention shifted. He examined the smaller fellow closely, his nostrils twitching ever so slightly. He might have asked a question or two to the squirrel, but he chose not to, and his focus turned to the auctioneer again. He slouched back in his seat, silently watching.

“Pour syrup down their throat and pinch their nose shut with your fingers?” Deryn sharply inhaled. "It’s not very discreet, but neither’s a dead body. I’ll need to remember outside the box tricks like that.”

“If you can do it over breakfast with waffles or pancakes, you could potentially mark it as an accident. Some of the syrup is bound to be digested by the time an autopsy or toxicology report rolls through, lessening the amount and having the benefit of not only looking less suspicious, but also potentially through off the timeframe in order to provide a better alibi,” Evelyn speaks quickly, nodding to herself as she does.

(I’m dead :skull:)

(And I’m not sure if a haunted blanket is even dead)

“…”

“I don’t think most people pour syrup into their lungs during breakfast, even accidentally,” Santiago cut in.
