Welcome to Undertale Yellow’s Bad Moon Rising.

This game is storytold by:
@Magnus
@Silviu200530
Official characters are the property of The Pandemonium Institute.

The mountain range stood against the horizon like a stoic giant, casting a long shadow across the seldom-hiked grounds. Many humans had trekked towards the lonely peak, skirting along the narrow weathered path, and most had turned their backs to the senseless heights and retreated towards the base. The land felt cursed, some would say; as if one were intruding over the catacombs while restless monsters crowded beneath your ankles, waiting for the opportunity to latch onto your legs and tear your soul down to their realm. While some of the more logic-inclined climbers might dismiss such superstitions, nobody could deny the fact of the numerous mysterious disappearances that were associated with those few humans who ascended the mountain peak. Those who climbed the mountain… were said to never return. With age came the wisdom to avoid seeking danger out.

Gameplay

  • Phase Lengths

“Temperature stones can be a large factor in determining their location’s climate.”

    :black_flag: Game Night Start

    :sun_behind_small_cloud: Day Phase: 48 hours. (36hrs w/ 12+ Players)
    :ballot_box: Votes Lock: Final hour.

During these times, players may freely talk and whisper to each other. You may scheme, lie, share information, or stay quiet and try to puzzle out who is who. Then, you vote on who will be executed. This is the main part of the game, mostly handled by the players themselves.

    :crescent_moon: Night Phase: 24 hours. (12 hrs w/ 12+ Players)
    :stopwatch: Actions Lock: Final hour.

During the night phase, players may not communicate with one another. Some players will wake to learn information or use powerful abilities. Typically the Demon attacks at night, killing one or more players or otherwise causing havoc.

  • Nominations and Voting

“These monsters sure are cruel! And who is their main influence? The King.”

    Voting

:loud_sound: Nomination — First living vote on a player
:ballot_box: Voting — Multi-Voting (For living players only)
:balance_scale: Execution — Plurality (Most votes at EOD)
:crossed_swords: Draws — Results in Random Execution
    :no_bell: Sleep — Valid Vote

:ghoststab: Dead Players: Can only vote on nominees once.

Players may cast votes or nominations using the vote tags described in the Voting Guide.

Players must be nominated before they may be voted on that day. Each player may only be nominated once per day, and each living player may only nominate once per day. If a player tries to cast an illegal nomination or vote, their input will be discounted.

Living players may vote freely on any nominated players. At the end of the day, the player with the highest counts of vote that day will be executed.

  • Whispers

“Don’t move. Don’t make a sound. Hushh hushh!”

    :minidisc: Whisper Template/whisper @Players + /accept [@Player]

    • Whispers — Day-Exclusive, Publicly Announced, Mutual Consent
    • Whisper Restriction — (# of Minions) + 2 per Day
    • Whisper PMs — Player-Created (Include Hosts)
    • Neighbour Whispers — Unannounced, 15 daily words per Neighbour

Once a whisper has been declared and accepted, the two players may whisper via private message until one of them speaks publicly in the game chat, at which point the whisper is considered broken and the players must declare whispers again if they wish to whisper.

  • Death

“Fastest to their weapon wins. Ten paces.”

    • Rolecard Reveals — Flipless, but flavour is shown upon death.
    • Dead Interaction — Public communication + 1 vote (but no ability unless otherwise stated)

If a player is killed in the night before they would perform their ability, they will not do so (see “Night Action Resolution”). Any ability with a persistent effect will end upon that player’s death.

Dead players may vote freely until they end the day voting a player. Once this happens, their “vote token” is spent, and they may no longer vote.

    Setup

  • Characters

“Some come for the band, some for the hotspring… but the monsters love our coffee the most.”

Every character ability is unique and can only be distributed once. The Storytellers may decide which characters are in play, or shuffle them at random.

Night* (with an asterisk) in all contexts means “Night, except the first.”

    Possible Townsfolk Characters
Grandmother You start knowing a good player & their character. If the demon kills them, you die too.
Sailor Each night, choose an alive player: either you or they are drunk until dusk. You can’t die.
Chambermaid Each night, choose 2 alive players (not yourself, not travellers): you learn how many woke tonight due to their ability.
Exorcist Each night*, choose a player (different to last night): the Demon, if chosen, learns who you are and doesn’t wake tonight.
Innkeeper Each night*, choose 2 players: they can’t die tonight, but one is drunk until dusk.
Gambler Each night*, choose a player & guess their character: if you guess wrong you die.
Gossip Each day, you may make a public statement. Tonight, if it was true, a player dies.
Courtier Once per game, at night, choose a character: they are drunk for 3 nights & 3 days.
Professor Once per game, at night*, choose a dead player: if they are a Townsfolk, they are resurrected.
Minstrel When a minion dies by execution, all other players (except Travellers) are drunk until dusk tomorrow.
Tea Lady If both of your alive neighbors are good, they can’t die.
Pacifist Executed good players might not die.
Fool The 1st time you die, you don’t.
    Possible Outsider Characters
Tinker You might die at any time.
Moonchild* When you learn that you died, publicly choose 1 alive player. Tonight, if it was a good player, they die.
Goon Each night, the 1st player to choose you with their ability is drunk until dusk. You become their alignment.
Lunatic You think you are a Demon, but you are not. The Demon knows who you are & who you choose at night.
    Possible Minion Characters
Godfather You start knowing which Outsiders are in play. If 1 died today, choose a player tonight: they die. [-1 or +1 Outsider]
Devil’s Advocate Each night, choose a living player (different to last night): if executed tomorrow, they don’t die.
Assassin Once per game, at night*, choose a player: they die, even if for some reason they could not.
Mastermind If the demon dies by execution (ending the game), play for 1 more day. If a player is then executed, their team loses.
    Possible Demon Characters
Zombuul Each night*, if no-one died today, choose a player: they die. The 1st time you die, you live but register as dead.
Pukka Each night, choose a player: they are poisoned. The previously poisoned player dies then becomes healthy.
Shabaloth Each night*, choose 2 players: they die. A dead player you chose last night might be regurgitated.
Po Each night*, you may choose a player: they die. If your last choice was no one, choose 3 players tonight.
    • Anyone may claim to be the Moonchild. Players who learn they have died will have six hours to publicly claim Moonchild and choose a player. The day will not be extended if the executed player claims Moonchild; instead, it will be publicly announced who they have chosen during the night.
  • Night Action Resolution

“Tough it out for now and we’ll see where this new path takes us. A little excitement never hurt anyone!”

All actions are processed in the following order each night. If a player is dead during their turn in action resolution, they do not act (unless stated otherwise).

  • Storyteller

“I’m a little more helpful than you might have thought. Anything you can’t do by yourself is my job.”

The Storyteller is a term used to refer to us, the hosts of this game. We are not players and can neither win nor lose the game. Our purpose is to fairly facilitate the game for both teams.

We will decide what happens with any open-ended ability behaviours, and will try to keep the game fun and balanced.

The extent of our ability to affect on the game is outlined above. We cannot break any existing rules, only decide what happens within the bounds of the characters’ abilities and base game rules.

  • Malfunctions

“You aren’t who I believed you to be, are you? How could I be so foolish?”

    Synonyms: Drunk / Poison
    Antonyms: Sober / Healthy

A malfunctioning character cannot affect the gamestate in any way using their ability. If a malfunctioning character would receive feedback, the information they learn is arbitrary (Storytellers decide).

The malfunctioning status lasts indefinitely, unless stated otherwise.

  • Victory

“I worked towards a project. Bigger than myself, bigger than all of us.”

The Good team wins when all Demons are dead.
The Evil team wins when only 2 players live.

In the event of a tie (both teams win at the same time), Good wins.

The Mastermind is the only alternate route to victory or defeat that may exist in this game.

    Miscellaneous

  • Travellers

A Traveller is a player character that can enter or exit a game at any point. Their identity and ability are known to all players, but their alignment is decided by the Storyteller.

Traveller characters will be selected from this wiki page, in regards to factoring balance and entertainment for both the player in question, and everyone else in the game.

Travellers may be exiled by majority vote at any time, without requiring execution. Nor do they count as “players” for any rules or win conditions.

If a Traveller is evil-aligned, they learn who the Demon is.

    Recommended Traveller Characters
Apprentice On your 1st night, you gain a Townsfolk ability (if good) or a Minion ability (if evil).
Voudon Only you & the dead can vote. A vote token is not required to do so.
Judge Once per game, if another player nominated, you may choose to force the current execution to pass or fail.
Bishop Only the Storyteller can nominate. At least 1 opposing player must be nominated each day.
  • Flavour

This game references soundtracks and characters from Undertale Yellow directed by Master Sword, which is a fan-developed prequel to Undertale by Toby Fox. Grab your cowboy hat and your gun, and accompany the sixth human on their journey as they meet with friends, new and old.

The full version of the game is available for free on the GameJolt page.

Music hyperlinks connect to the official UTY soundtrack on Youtube, and rolecards may feature (early) music spoilers. Video comments may give away major gameplay spoilers, which we take no credit for. Listen to the music at your own risk. Where possible, flavour will avoid major spoilers.

Players will have their flavour flipped upon death instead of their rolecards. Flavour may be alignment-indicative, but is not role-indicative. Any players that might be hindered by this will be provided with a flavour bluff, which will instead flip in the place of their real flavour.

There is no flavour anticlaim, although attempting to solve the game through flavour is not recommended.

  • Example Rolecards

Rolecards will be flipped upon death until the first linebreak, excluding ability and alignment. This flavour and character will not be in play.

Welcome to Bad Moon Rising, {Player}! Your name is FRISK.
    LV 1

“Feeling the cold atmosphere of a new land… it fills you with determination.”

The eighth human to fall into the Underground, they embark on a journey to return to the Surface. Though Frisk does not show much expression in the Overworld, NPCs often describe Frisk’s expressions. Depending on their actions, players can interpret Frisk as merciful and kind, or merciless and violent. Meanwhile, some NPCs emphasise Frisk’s kindness, understanding, and grace. Their determination grants the power to respawn at SAVE Points after death.

    You are the Empath.
    -( Townsfolk )-

    ACT - Nightly Information, Passive

“For years, monsters have been sealed away by a powerful spell that could only be broken by seven human souls.”

Welcome to Bad Moon Rising! This script is recommended for players who are proactive, dedicated to working as a team, and don’t fear dying.

Bad Moon Rising, as an official script, has missed out on receiving much attention on this site. As this is designed to be a kill-revolving game, the following factors should be of note.

    • The game will run better at higher playercounts, needing around a minimum of ten at least to avoid potentially ending near-immediately. The game can and will be run with fewer players if need be.
    • Phase lengths are 36/12 hours at 12+ players, rather than 48/24. The game has a potential to drag out just as much as it could zap by, and this serves as a countermeasure.

    Thank you.

That’s a fair enough reason to abstain from wanting to join a game, if you’re currently busy with life or other games. You can always feel free to travel or wait for a while to see whether you want to join or not, whichever feels the most comfortable for you. image

    is this mafia

This is Mafia with a few fundamental differences.
In brief: open setup, the evil team has a flagbearer, dead players can still talk and it’s flipless.

Here is how the game works:
